On this page of the Assassin's Creed Valhalla guide, we answer the question of how to improve the main character's equipment, i.e. the weapons and armor elements used by Eivor. This is done primarily to increase the statistics of items, although new features may also be unlocked.
Each weapon and garment can be upgraded up to 10 times with crafting materials. The number of available and possible upgrades can be read by highlighting the item in the inventory - these are the rectangles under the main statistics. In the example above the dagger has 6 purchased improvements out of 7 possible at any given time.
In order to improve the item with it highlighted, you have to hold Square (on PS4/PS5) or X (Xbox One/Series). This will, of course, only be possible after all the requirements have been met and the possible obstacles described below have been dealt with.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to improve a given item as much as possible at an early stage of the game, because the game uses two types of special limitations that delay the process. Generally, it's about improving the same thing throughout the game, not right after you get it.
The first difficulty is that the number of improvements allowed at a given time depends on the quality of the item:
- Fine(lowest) quality - 2 improvements
- Superior quality - 4 improvements
- Flawless quality - 7 improvements
- Mythical (highest) quality - 10 improvements
As a reminder, you can only increase the quality of the item by visiting Gunnar the blacksmith's in Ravensthorpe, and giving him ingots in the right amount and variety. This topic is described in more detail on the page Ingots - how to acquire them?
It is also possible, of course, a scenario in which you've received an item of Superior, Flawless, or Mythical quality. In such a situation, the number of upgrades needed to reach the highest quality will decrease.
The second difficulty is that each subsequent improvement is more and more expensive. Above all, you have to spend more and more common raw materials - hides and iron ore.
More problematic is the need to spend rarer varieties of materials - fabrics and titanium ingots. You will start to find them in larger quantities only in later zones, i.e. those with higher levels of power. If you are looking for additional information, go to the Crafting Materials - how to get? page of the guide.
Two additional tips:
- Try to get as many crafting materials as possible, especially by exploring the game world and opening small loot boxes.
- First of all, improve those weapons or armor elements that will help your Eivor most. For example, if you like to kill your enemies with silent bow attacks, improve your bow to deal even more damage.
