Main and optional bosses – what's the difference?
Boss fights in AC Valhalla are indicated by the appearance of a long health bar on top of the screen. This means that dealing with such an opponent will be more difficult and will take Eivor much more time. You must be aware that all the bosses in the game have strong attacks, and often use unique techniques and skills (e.g. they use poison, catch Eivor, or throw weapons).
The bosses in the game are divided into obligatory and additional ones. Beating the main bosses is required to complete the campaign, so they appear during the main quests. The power level of such a boss always corresponds to the power level of the region where he was confronted.
Fighting optional bosses isn't required to complete the game. You can completely ignore them or deal with them when it's convenient for you, e.g. after you have increased Eivor's power. Remember that the power level of the optional boss may differ from the power level of the region in which he is. This may come as a surprise. Fortunately, in most situations, you can easily withdraw from the fight with additional bosses, for example, by leaving the boss's lair or the battle arena. Only in side quests there might be no such option.
The optional AC Valhalla bosses include:
- Bosses from side quests and events
- Legendary animals
- Zealots
- Daughters of Lerion
- Lost Drengr
Bosses and related important choices
Boss fights may be related to choices, and in most cases, the choice may appear after defeating the boss. The choices differ, but generally, two general rules applies here:
- Leaving the boss alive can (but does not have to) make him return in a later stage of the game (as a "good guy" or as an antagonist).
- Refusing to defeat the boss in an honorary way may result in a negative reaction from some other important characters later in the campaign.
All important choices, including those related to the game bosses, are described in a separate chapter of this guide.
Are elite opponents also bosses?
In the game you can also meet the Elites, who you can recognize by golden names appearing above their heads. These are not bosses but slightly stronger varieties of standard opponents. However, every elite enemy has longer health and stamina bars and uses more powerful attacks (often impossible to block red ones).
Do you have to prepare yourself for bossfights?
It is not obligatory, although advisable. The main bosses in Assassin's Creed Valhalla are, in general, not hard to beat. Optional bosses may be more problematic. Fighting them may require more focus and may be longer.
Here are some universal tips for fighting bosses:
- Try to develop Eivor's power as much as possible. The more power you have, the easier it will be to win a duel with the boss - your attacks will become stronger, and the bosses will become weaker.
- Escape when you feel overwhelmed. This applies only to battles with additional bosses because you can't do that in main quests. Running away on horse is most effective.
- Improve your rations and unlock more adrenaline slots. You will need a lot of crafting materials to upgrade your rations. New adrenaline slots can be unlocked from the skill tree.
- Start the battle with as many supplies as possible - especially rations and arrows. Try to have the maximum allowed.
- First, deal with the boss's minions. This only applies to fights in which the boss may be accompanied by ordinary enemies. Some bosses may call for reinforcements. Always deal with standard opponents first so that they don't interfere with fighting the boss.
