Difficulty levels - general information
The first time you can choose the difficulty level is when you start a new game. It is a three-stage process, as you set the difficulty level for the different elements of the game separately. This will help you to adjust the gameplay to your own preferences in the best possible way. The three main categories for which you choose the difficulty are:
- Exploration - The settings affect, among others, how easy it is to find objects and locations in the game world.
- Combat - The settings affect, among others, how easy it is to defeat enemies in direct fights and avoid death.
- Stealth - Facilitators include how easy it is to avoid getting detected and to perform stealth kills.
You can also change all difficulty level settings during the game. To do this you have to open the pause menu and go to the Gameplay tab.
Difficulty level settings - exploration
The three main difficulty levels for this setting are:
- Adventurer – the easy difficulty
- Explorer – the default normal difficulty level
- Pathfinder – the high difficulty
Regardless of the selected difficulty level, you can also enable/disable the distance and nearest activity icons appearing on the compass.
The higher the difficulty level, the less information is presented on the screen. You will also rely less on the markers on the compass and world map. You may be interested in this if you want to explore the game world by yourself, without any additional help.
Difficulty level settings - combat
The four main difficulty levels for this setting are:
- Skald – is the easy difficulty
- Vikingr – the default normal difficulty level
- Berserkr – the high difficulty level
- Drengr – the very high difficulty level
Regardless of the selected difficulty level, you can also adjust the targeting support. The aiming assistant can be useful especially when using a bow.
Higher difficulty levels affect enemies' health, their resistance, and the damage they inflict.
Difficulty level settings - stealth
The three main difficulty levels for this setting are:
- Apprentice – the easy difficulty
- Assassin – the default normal difficulty level
- Master Assassin – the high difficulty level
Additionally, you can enable a Guaranteed Assassination which is very big facilitation. It allows you to kill every opponent with a single stealth attack. This can make the game much easier for you, as it eliminates the need for special preparation to kill a stronger/elite opponent. The developers discourage using this setting when you are playing the game for the first time as it destroys the game's balance.
Increasing the difficulty level makes the enemies' senses sharpened – they can spot and expose the main character faster. The high difficulty level is recommended if you are looking for challenging stealth.
