The Stone Vanguard is a mandatory boss in Black Myth Wukong. He's one of the main bosses of the second chapter, encountered at the end of a cave behind the bridge in Windrest Hamlet. On this page of the guide we've described how to defeat the Vanguard, listed its moveset, recommended strategy and rewards for killing it.
Stone Vanguard in a nutshell
- The Vanguard is a powerful but very slow boss that you shouldn't have any trouble with as long as you stay patient.
- When he slams the ground with both hands stone spikes sprout out - you can avoid them with Pillar Stance.
- Gain focus through light attacks, then use Pillar Stance to avoid the stone spikes and hit the boss immediately after.
- When the boss starts summoning exploding rocks move away from it and dodge to the side.
Stone Vanguard's Attacks
- Double-handed ground slam - the boss stands upright, raising both arms, and slams them down into the ground. Stone spikes erupt a moment after.
- Melee combo - the boss raises one arm and starts punching the ground with his arms, alternating between them, finishing with a double-handed ground slam and spikes.
- Stone spikes - each time the boss uses his double-handed ground slam, stone spikes erupt from the ground a moment after. Pillar Stance is the best way to avoid them, as long as you have some Focus - you'll avoid the attack and be able to immediately counter.
- Lunge - the boss turns sideways to you, then lunges at you and punches you once.
- Single punch - the boss stands upright and punches once.
- Boulder toss - the boss turns sideways to you, digs into the ground with his hand and chucks a single boulder at you. It only uses this attack if it's far away.
- Explosive rocks - the boss starts punching the ground while far away from you, summoning rocks on legs, which jump towards you and explode. Dodge to the side multiple times while standing away from the boss - the boss will wrap up by lunging at you himself, which you also need to avoid.
How to fight the Vanguard?
The Stone Vanguard is very simple mechanically, dealing high damage but being predictable, slow and not having may attacks. Due to the boss's size, it is difficult to stagger him - you must land a heavy blow charged with at least three focus points to do so. As long as you remain patient, the fight shouldn't pose you any serious trouble.
The boss's most important attack is its double-handed ground slam - a moment after stone spikes erupt from the ground around the boss. This is your biggest opening if you're using Pillar Stance. Attack the boss with light attacks to gain Focus, then use Pillar Stance after the ground-slam. While perched on the staff you can avoid the spikes and immediately slam the staff down on the boss once the spikes are gone. Follow this strategy and you should win easily.
When the boss moves away from you, he may start summoning rocks on legs, which will jump towards you and explode. Dodge to the side - eventually the boss itself will lunge at you, so be ready to dodge. The fight only has a single phase, so use your spells and transformations without worries - you should kill the boss pretty quickly.
