Black Bear Guai is a mandatory boss you'll face in Black Myth Wukong. He's the final boss of the game's first chapter, encountered at Bodhi Peak in the Black Wind Cave. On this page of the guide we've described how to defeat the bear, listed his moveset, recommended strategy and rewards for killing it.
Black Bear Guai in a nutshell
- Before fighting the bear, it's worth defeating Elder Jinchi, as the Fireproof Cloak obtained by beating him will make the second phase of the fight significantly easier.
- As befitting a huge bear, the boss's attacks are fast, wild, and powerful. Stick to the boss' side, where you can easily avoid most of his moves.
- Smash Stance is the best choice for this fight thanks to its mobility - Pillar Stance won't do much good since the boss uses overhead strikes often.
- You can use your newly acquired Cloud Step spell to easily sneak up on the boss from behind and hit him during his combos.
- Casting Immobilize when the boss is in his wind form will transform him back into a bear and knock him down, letting you go on an offensive.
- Halfway through the fight the boss' limbs will start burning, enhancing his attacks - save your transformations and buffs for the second phase to end it quickly.
Guai's Attacks
- Double swing - the boss stands on all fours and quickly swings twice - dodge to the back or side.
- Overhead smash - the boss stands upright, raises his arms and does an overhead smash. Dodge to the side or back.
- Double overhead smash - the boss stands upright and stomps down slightly with a single foot, then smashes down twice - first with a single paw, then with both. Dodge to the side or back. In the second phase he can immediately follow the second smash with a low sweep.
- Crush - the boss jumps into the air and tries to land on you back-first - dodge to the back.
- Pugilist combo - the boss stands upright and attacks a few times - two quick punches, a slightly delayed stomp and a heavily delayed overhead smash. The combo's animation is very short - try using Cloud Step to get behind the boss.
- Wide swing - the boss stands upright and swings his arms widely. This move can hit you even when you stand at the boss' side, so be careful.
- Five hit combo - the boss stands on all fours and swings down twice, leaving air trails behind his paws. After a short delay he lunges forward doing two more overhead swings, then finishes with a low sweep.
- Fire pillars - the boss uses this attack when he drops down to half health. He strikes the ground with his paws, creating small embers below you, which then erupt into pillars of fire. Be careful and stop attacking, focusing on dodging and moving away from the flames until they stop.
- Black wind - the boss transforms into invincible black wind. When the wind flashes black, it means he's about to ram you - dodge. You can also cast Immobilize to force the boss back into his bear form and knock him over, making him vulnerable.
- Flaming double swing - the boss starts using this attack in phase two. He stands upright and swings diagonally twice with his burning claws.
- Lunge - the boss starts using this attack in phase two. He stands upright and lunges towards you. After landing he strikes twice quickly, covering a large distance - you can approach him from behind as he's recovering.
How to fight Black Bear Guai?
Before fighting this boss, we recommend first defeating Elder Jinchi, the secret boss of the first chapter. Beating him rewards you with the Fireproof Mantle, which should last you half the battle when activated. Activate it in phase two, when the boss starts dealing fire damage, to make the battle much easier.
As befitting a bear, the boss's attacks are not graceful - they are fast, wild, and powerful. Most of his moves only reach in front of him though, and turning takes him a while due to his size. Stick to the boss's side whenever you can and wail on him, as you're relatively safe until he turns to face you.
Smash Stance is the best choice for this fight. You probably don't have access to the Thrust Stance yet (and if you do, it's likely not upgraded enough), while the boss' many overhead attacks make Pillar Stance nearly useless. The mobility of the Strike Stance will prove useful throughout.
Remember to use spells, as they are incredibly useful in this fight. Cloud Step will allow you to heal yourself safely and approach the boss from behind - we recommend using it while the boss is standing upright, as his combos are more difficult to avoid then. You can also use Immobilize during phase two when the boss starts turning into black wind. Casting Immobilize will force him back into his bear form and knock him down, letting you attack him freely.
The second phase of the fight is very similar to the first one, although the boss now deals fire damage. You should save your transformations and buffs for phase two to end the fight quickly and defeat the bear, completing the game's first chapter.
