That Which Remains - main quest | Blade Grave Tyranny Guide
Last update: 27 December 2016
The following chapter contains a detailed description of gameplay in Iron Hearth (M13) and Rust Canyons (M20) locations, associated with That Which Remains main quest. Here you will find everything you need in order to complete the mentioned quest.
Certain aspects were described in separate sections.
Start the quest
The mission will appear in the journal after you go back to Graven Ashe and report about the events of Into the Maelstrom quest.
If you support Scarlet Chorus this quest will appear in your journal after finishing the quest The Symphony of the Forge and having a conversation with Voices of Nerat.
Your main task here is to gather information about a certain artifact that allows anyone to enter Sentinel Stand regardless of the fact that the Edict of Storms is still active. You have to travel to Rust Canyons where the Unbroken looking for the said artifact can be found.
After entering the location you will stumble upon a wounded soldier of the Unbroken. Regardless of your choices during the conversation, the commander of the Disfavored - Teodor - will appear beside him. Unless you react, he will kill the soldier. Afterwards, he will inform the commander of the Unbroken that assistance for the Disfavored has arrived. When the conversation ends, head north and speak with Teodor to continue with the quest.
Not relevant to the Scarlet Chorus - regardless of your choices during the conversation you will have to fight the group of The Disfavored, so you can skip this step. But, if you are able to convince them, you can free/kill The Unbroken that are held captive (this will have a small impact on your reputation with that faction).
During the conversation you will learn about his plan and how you can help with it. The further part of the quest will begin once you move close to the eastern bridge and defeat a group of Unbroken stationed there. The location of the bridge can be found on the map associated with the location (M20). Nonetheless, as soon as you get close to the gate leading into the Unbroken encampment you will be interrupted by Elia, commander of the said faction. Considering your previous actions in Duskwatch Fort she won't be friendly towards you and will mock you from the very beginning of the conversation. You can repay in kind, gaining a large amount of Wrath from the Unbroken.
Break into the camp
You have two choices here: you can either attack the guards at the main gate, or decide to walk away without further explanation. The first option causes every Unbroken soldier to attack you immediately, including the guards at the gate. If you, however, leave without a word the guards will allow you to reach the eastern bridge, although there's another group of Unbroken located there that won't let you go through it, forcing you to initiate an encounter. Remember that the bridge is very narrow, allowing a single enemy to block your whole party. It's better to simulate a retreat to lure the enemies out towards a more suitable ground.
After you've dealt the guards at the bridge, you have to head straight ahead. At the end of the road you will find the eastern gate leading into the Unbroken camp. You have to destroy it (required 40 Athletics).
Capture the Unbroken camp
Entering the camp means that you have to fight the soldiers of the Unbroken. Try to lure out smaller groups of enemies by retreating towards the route you've come from. Groups of enemies are placed in such a way that you will be able to regenerate lost health and save the game in between them. You have to face two groups of enemies. After you've dealt with the guards located near the eastern gate, head towards the main gate of the encampment. Before you venture into the location, however, get rid of the main gate, allowing forces of the Disfavored to enter the camp and aid you in combat.
It appears that the forces of the Unbroken have taken a shelter in a further part of the location. The route leads through a bridge, but the moment you approach it the Unbroken will raise the bridge and block the passage. Head towards the eastern gate and reach a stone ledge shown on the above screenshot. Get on it and defeat a group of Unbroken located there.
When you're done, you will be able to perform a ranged attack and hit the mechanism of the bridge (required 41 Athletics). This will destroy the mechanism and lower the bridge. Now you can safely reach the rest of the Unbroken and the commander of the encampment. After a short conversation Elia will retreat to a further part of the location and the passage will be blocked by another group of Unbroken.
When you've dealt with them, a group of Disfavored, accompanied by Teodor, will enter the encampment. After a short conversation a new quest will appear in your journal - Cleaning out the Junkyard. You can also betray your alliance with the Disfavored and announce yourself as the ruler of Rust Canyons. However, this causes you to enter the path of Chaos - refrain from doing so if you aim for the Disfavored path.
The chase and completion of the quest
If you've decided to keep the Alliance, you have to travel north, following Elia's steps. You can take out any remaining forces of the Unbroken along your way - doing so will complete Cleaning out the Junkyard quest. Also, watch out for numerous traps while chasing Elia, as those can severely deplete the health of your characters.
Sooner or later Elia will find herself between your party and a group of Disfavored soldiers. After a short conversation the battle will start. The encounter is symbolic, as the Disfavored soldiers are immortal. Nonetheless, you should watch out for Elia's attacks. She is a capable warrior, which is why you should just retreat a little and wait for the Disfavored to join the fight. Additionally, you can place your characters on the bridge and rotate them to reduce losses.
Once defeated, Elia still won't be willing to give you any information. You can break her fingers to force her to talk. Ask her about the first Regent Aspison and she will tell you about the Steadfast Insignia. Additionally, a new location will appear on the map - Oldwalls Breach. When you ask her about the commanders of the Unbroken another location - Trapper's Junction - will appear. Finally, you have to decide about the method you want to end her life with. Even if you decide to take her into captivity, you still have to kill her.
Elia is dead, the quest is completed and you will be able to continue your journey. Before you leave the location, however, you should search the area for hidden treasure. If you have exhausted all of the dialogue options during the conversation will Elia, you will now how two new quests in your journal - A Breach Between Worlds and Breaking the Enemy. What is more, two of the previously started quests will be updated: A Trial of Archons (a note lying by Elia's body) and Seats of Power (the possibility to reach another tower).
