Characteristic | Factions - Macedon TW: Rome II Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Macedon location is not the best. The country borders are exposed on all sides and only good will of your neighbors prevents them from conquering your land. Epirus, located on south-east, is busy fighting your ally - Sparta, which sooner or later will also involve you in this war. There is Tylis on the east - one more opponent willing to conquer your land. The rest of Thracia is neutral for time being but you have to closely monitor movement of troops of local rulers.
Macedon has one of best infantry units available in the game. Its spearmen along with shield bearers, pikemen and melee infantry are able to defeat every encountered opponent. In addition the army is complemented by a great cavalry - so prepared you can follow Alexander the Great footsteps.
Starting bonuses
Macedon is one of two diadochi kingdoms available in the game and therefore has bonuses specific for them:
- Alexander's Legacy: -20% resistance to foreign occupation
- Successor Conflicts: +10% morale for all units during battles against Hellenic factions
In addition it has two more bonuses and one penalty, unique for Macedon:
- Commercial Contract Leases: +10% wealth from industrial buildings
- Barbarian Subduers: +10% morale during battles against barbarian tribes
- Hellenic Rivalry: Major diplomatic penalty with all Hellenic factions (cultural aversion)
The most important available units
Hoplites
The basic Macedon infantry: they are effective both in attack and in defense. Few units of hoplites can easily hold the front line, giving enough time for cavalry to flank the enemy.
Shield bearers
Elite Macedon spearmen. They have the best armor in the game, making them virtually immune to enemy attacks. Thanks to their high morale they almost never panic. Unit of shield bearers is able to fight any foe.
Pikemen
Basic infantry equipped with pikes. It is ideal to block narrow passages - just secure its flanks and pikemen will defeat even more numerous enemy.
Foot companions
Macedon elite pikemen. Same as their predecessors, their preferable positions on the battlefield are narrow passages, which can be blocked with phalanx. On the open field you should deploy them in the center of the rank.
Royal peltasts
Infantry equipped with javelins (used only when charging) and swords. They perfectly cooperate with pikemen and shield bearers, attacking the enemy from the flank.
Archers
Basic Macedon projectile units. A good range combined with high damage often forces the enemy to attack, just to face the Macedon phalanx.
Companion cavalry
Elite melee cavalry. Greatly armored, well-trained, inflicting massive damage. It is suitable to support infantry as well as to smash smaller infantry units and to counter enemy cavalry.
Tarantine cavalry
Missile cavalry, capable to thin enemy ranks before the main attack. It is useful especially on the Middle East, where you not always will be able to force enemy to attack your wall of pikes.
