General information
In Oddworld Soulstorm, we can acquire gadgets in three different ways. Certain items can be obtained through all three of these methods, while others can only be acquired through one or two.
- Finding items in the game world - They can be found in all kinds of containers and crates, we also have a chance to get them by pickpocketing blinded or stunned Sligs.
- Using vending machines - Each vending machine offers one type of item. Additionally, some vending machines might issue items for free while others will require a fee (in the form of Moolah).
- Crafting items - We need to know the crafting recipe (they are automatically unlocked as the game progresses) and have the necessary crafting ingredients in our inventory. Components can also be obtained while exploring or by using vending machines.
Most gadgets are one-use items. This means that they disappear after use and that Abe can only carry a limited number of them in his inventory. Gadgets that are not easy to find or craft (e.g. Smoke Screen Plus grenades) are best saved for later and used only in dire circumstances.
The best gadgets - recommendations
Here is a list of gadgets we think are the most helpful in the game. It's a good idea to use these regularly and to always be on a lookout for more:
- IED Stun Mine and IED Super Stun Mine - We can use them to easily and effectively stun opponents.
- Smoke Screen and Smoke Screen Plus - These are helpful in avoiding detection and, additionally, the Plus grenades can stun enemies.
- Bouncy Candy and Bouncy Binding Candy - These make effective weapons against Sligs. The Binding version automatically binds them.
- Fizzy Pow - These can be used to destroy environmental elements and attack opponents.
- Rock Candy - These ordinary candies can be used to attack Sligs and solve environmental puzzles.
- Tape - It's useful for tying up Sligs that have been stunned beforehand. The bound enemy won't be able to free themselves.
We have provided detailed descriptions of all the gadgets below.
Antidote
This is a unique gadget that only needs to be crafted once during the entire game. From then on, it will permanently stay in our inventory and will never get completely used up. It's impossible to skip unlocking this item. Creating an antidote is a mandatory task in level 4 - The Funicular.
The antidote is used in the game to treat sick Mudokons. It is also useful after completing level 4, because in subsequent levels we can also encounter followers in need of treatment. Only after giving them the antidote will the Mudokons be able to follow us to the Bird Portal.
IED Stun Mine
Required crafting components: Battery (rare material - can also be found in vending machines), Wiring Kit, Tin Can. We can also find mines alongside other loot.
We can use stun mines starting with level 2 - The Ruins. As the name implies, they can be used to stun our opponents. The mine explodes on contact with the target and stuns them, allowing us to either tie them up or avoid them.
Note - Abe and his Mudokon followers can also activate deployed mines. They don't just work on your enemies. Try to avoid them or, if there is no alternative path, have the main character jump over them.
Smoke Screen
Required crafting components: Brew Bottle, Detergent.
Smoke screens are very helpful in avoiding detection, both when traveling alone or with a group of Mudokons. We can successfully use them to temporarily reduce the field of view of opponents (including the very dangerous machines with big grins) and to blind scanners in order to avoid triggering alarms.
Brewnade
Required crafting components: Brew Bottle, Lighter, Anti-viral Wipes (rare material).
Explosive grenades are unlocked relatively late. We will probably want to use them for the first time in level 11 - The Mines, as they're a part of one of the challenges. Brewnades are useful against opponents and when we want to quickly light an area on fire. This is especially useful when facing elite Slig variants, whom we don't necessarily want to avoid.
Bouncy Candy
Required crafting components: Rock Candy, Rubberbands.
This is a much better version of the 'ordinary' candy. It has two main advantages:
- It allows us to attack opponents on higher and lower platforms with more ease. We can plan the candy's throw trajectory to make it bounce off of the wall or the ceiling. Abe doesn't need to take risks and personally approach the particular enemy.
- The opponent we hit is immediately stunned, making Bouncy Candy stronger than the standard Rock Candy. Moreover, when we land a hit on the enemy, they might be pushed back and if they were standing at the edge of a platform, they can fall off and take damage or even die.
Fizzy Pow
Required crafting components: Fizzy Pop, Blastos (rare material - can also be found in vending machines).
Big cans of Fizzy Pow are stronger than regular Fizzy Pop. They have two main uses:
- We can use them to blow up interactive elements of the environment - the game allows you to test this during level 9 - Slig Barracks, where we have to use Fizzy Pow to destroy the bars and unlock the passage.
- We can use them to eliminate opponents - this is achieved by hitting a Slig with two Fizzy Pows. This is useful if we want to clear out a given area for our Mudokon followers, but we are unable to use possession.
Bouncy Binding Candy
Required crafting components: Bouncy Candy, Tape, Epoxy (rare material).
This is by far the best candy type in the game. Its most important advantage is that it immediately binds the struck opponent, so we don't have to worry about them regaining consciousness after a while. Due to the fact that, in many of the levels, there is a shortage of tape to bind Sligs with, you should aim well with this candy so as not to waste it. The Bouncy Binding Candy gadget can also be useful in defense levels (such as during level 8 - Reunion at the Old Trellis), allowing you to quickly dispose of the attacking Sligs.
IED Super Stun Mine
Required crafting components: IED Stun Mine, Amplifier (rare material - can also be found in vending machines).
This is a stronger version of the IED Stun Mine, which may also deal some damage in addition to stunning the enemy. We should be upgrading all of the mines we have, assuming that we have enough Amplifiers in our inventory, which are somewhat rare crafting materials.
Sticky Fizzy Pow
Required crafting components: Fizzy Pow, Gum (rare material - can also be found in vending machines).
It's a better version of Fizzy Pow exploding can and it sticks to targets. This may help us inflict more damage. We should be upgrading all of the Fizzy Pow cans we have, assuming that we have enough Gum in our inventory, which is a somewhat rare crafting material.
Flamethrower
Required crafting components: Fire Extinguisher, Lighter, Brew Bottle, Battery, Wiring Kit, Steel Hose.
This is the last gadget to be unlocked in the game. The opportunity to acquire a flamethrower appears in level 11 - The Mines. In the final part of this level, we'll ride on a platform and reach the location shown in the picture - an area with a multitude of vending machines offering crafting components. We will be able to create a flamethrower if we have collected all the necessary components earlier during the level.
The flamethrower allows us to set fire to our enemies and certain elements of the environment. A burning enemy might stop attacking Abe and start running amok in the area. There's also a chance that they will fall into a hole. The flamethrower has a limited fuel supply, but it will refuel itself automatically once we stop using the weapon.
Smoke Screen Plus
Required crafting components: Smoke Screen, Bone Powder (rare material).
The Smoke Screen Plus is a much better alternative to the standard version. In addition to the increased range and duration, they have an amazing additional feature - they will stun opponents in the cloud's area of effect. This is an excellent way to get rid of bothersome opponents. Unfortunately, the Bone Powder component needed to craft them is exceedingly rare, so we should only use them in the most difficult of locations. They are crucial in level 6 - Phat Station, where Abe must escort the Mudokons through several challenging areas and the Smoke Screen Plus grenades will make this task significantly easier.
Rock Candy
These items cannot be crafted. Candies can be found while exploring the game's world and issued for free by certain vending machines.
Candies have many uses - we can use them to distract opponents, beat environmental puzzles (such as hitting a hanging object) and stun Sligs. In the latter case, we need to hit the Slig at least three times in quick succession so that they don't have enough time to regenerate.
Brew Bottle
These items cannot be crafted. Bottles can be found in the game world or in vending machines, either for free or for a fee.
Brew Bottles can be used to craft other items, although they can also be used by themselves. Wherever a bottle is broken, an oily puddle is formed - we should look for opportunities to set them on fire upon contact with flames or sparks. This strategy is helpful or even necessary to solve certain environmental puzzles.
Fire Extinguisher
These items cannot be crafted. Premade fire extinguishers can be found in selected levels of the game. The first fire extinguisher appears during level 7 - The Hijack.
As expected, the fire extinguisher can be used to extinguish fires in order to guarantee Abe (and any other Mudokon) safe passage through a particular area. It has a tank with a limited capacity, but you only have to wait for a moment for it to start recharging itself automatically.
Flare
These items cannot be crafted. Flares can be found in the game world.
For most of the game, flares are used to illuminate caves, mines and other dark locations. They will lower your chance of missing potential secrets when exploring dark areas. They gain a new use during level 12 - The Sanctum- they can be used to repel the Sleech monsters, which would otherwise devour Abe alive.
Hand Torch
Hand torches cannot be crafted. Abe will automatically find the hand torch at the very beginning of level 12 - The Sanctum.
As expected, the hand torch can be used to illuminate your surroundings, although in level 12 it is also used to repel the Sleech monsters. Unfortunately, it's not as effective as flares. The hand torch's battery has a limited capacity, but it will regenerate automatically when we stop using the gadget for a while.
Tape
These items cannot be crafted. Tape can be found while exploring areas and when pickpocketing Sligs.
It's one of the most useful gadgets in the game. Tape can be used to bind Sligs, but you will need to have stunned them beforehand. The Slog creatures cannot be tied up, either. This method is worth using, because the bound opponent can't free themselves and after a while they will "disappear". The tape is helpful when traversing locations filled with numerous hazards (even as a group). Getting rid of a Slig for good will make the challenge much easier.
