Attack
The main character, Kena, can fight in different ways. The most basic form of attack is with the magic staff. Kena can perform both quick attacks that don't do a lot of damage but take out smaller enemies as well as more powerful and slower attacks. When using a powerful attack, you can hold down the button responsible for this attack to charge it up and deal even more damage.
The second form of attack is the bow. Kena forms her staff into a bow to shoot a magic arrow. You will unlock the bow after the first few main missions. You can shoot the arrow quickly, or you can pull the bow to take a more precise and powerful shot. It is perfect against distant targets or those with easy-to-spot weak points.
Defense
Kena also has several ways of defending herself from attacks. The first way is to hold down the button responsible for creating a protective barrier (L1 on PS4/PS5). Kena moves much slower, however, she will be able to withstand several hits without losing health. The color of the barrier indicates its durability. If it is blue, the barrier is in good condition. If it turns red, it means the barrier will not last very long.
The second way of defending is strongly related to the first. You can parry incoming attacks. The idea is to press, not hold, the button responsible for creating the barrier at the right moment. When you see the opponent making a swing, activate the barrier to deflect the attack and counter.
