This page of our guide to Dredge features a walkthrough for the Recording Rarities Pursuit, during which the Traveling Merchant will task you with catching four rare specimens: Oarfish, Coelacanth, Goliath Tigerfish and Gulper Eel. We explain where to find them and what rods are required to catch them.
To complete the task you'll need different rods for different kinds of fish. If you don't know how to get a specific rod, check the pages All fishing rods and How to get a Hadal rod? You'll also need Packed Explosives to blast your way through any obstacles. We've explained how to do so on the page How to remove Debris?

To start the quest you must talk to the Traveling Merchant who'll tell you of some rare fish species. The merchant appears in four different locations. It doesn't matter where you find her. You can start the mission in any Pontoon.
Rickety Pontoon in the Twisted Strand area.
Dusty Pontoon in the Gale Cliffs area.
Starlight Pontoon in the Stellar Basin area.
Charred Pontoon in the Devil's Spine area.
The Traveling Merchant will only mention the rare fish, suggesting you can find one species each in each area. She won't show you the exact locations, so they won't be marked on your map unlike other Pursuits.
You don't need to have the fish with you when returning to the Traveling Merchant. All that matters is catching it and gaining its Encyclopedia entry. This means you can sell them right away if you wish.
