When your ship is damaged, some of the cargo slots may become blocked and emptied. If the particular slot contained an item or a person, they will go overboard. Below we answer the question whether you can retrieve cargo lost this way.
Can items be recovered?
Once a message appears that an item has gone overboard as a result of damage, there is no way to retrieve it i.e. return and fish out the same item where it went overboard.
When it comes to Pursuit-related items, this may cause certain problems, as once lost, they won't respawn back at the place of receiving or finding. You will only receive a message that the task has ended.
Can passengers be retrieved?
Some Pursuits require taking a passenger/passengers on board. The passengers are stored in the cargo space, same as items and fish. When a passenger-occupied slot is damaged, the person will fall overboard, which will be indicated by an in-game message.
Such a passenger cannot be saved and dissapears completely from the game. If the person was involved in a Pursuit, the quest is concluded instantly.
How to limit the loss of items?
Whenever possible, place your most valuable items in Storage and take them out as the need arises . In Storage, items are safe from any harm and there is no possiblity of them dissapearing from it. Your Storage can be accessed from any dock location, simply choose My Storage. While in a dock, you can quickly move items to Storage by pressing MMB (PC), Triangle (PS), or Y (Xbox). This unfortunately, doesn't apply to passengers, who cannot be moved to Storage and will stay with you until the end of the involved Pursuit.
Only thing we can say now is to stay cautious during traveling. When carrying important cargo, sail during the day and avoid terrain obstacles that you can crash into, resulting in ship damage and loss of items.
