The last task in Disco Elysium, The Return, involves either a positive or a negative evaluation of your investigation. This walkthrough explains which of Harry's decisions and actions can be assessed well or negatively, unlocking different endings.
Unlocking the task and returning to the west coast
This is the last task in the main storyline and you will start it after completing the Inspect the phasmid task.
The heroes decide to leave the sick Deserter on the island and return to the mainland. To do this, you have to go through the anti-aircraft tower again and reach the boat you previously used to reach the island.
Final conversation in the fishing village
When you return to the west coast, save your game because you will shortly enter the final scene which cannot be interrupted.
Get off the pier and you will meet several people from the police station. The most important person among them is Jean Vicquemare. Judit Minot and Trant Heidelstam are present in the fishing village too. You may have met these characters before in the game and they will explain their roles to you in more detail.
During the conversation, you can discuss your discoveries that you've made throughout your investigation (the killer's personality, their weapon and motive, the phasmid's influence on the Deserter's health), as well as side cases.
The final scene can have 2 outcomes:
- Retaining your position in the Revachol Citizens Militia - this will happen if your investigation is assessed positively: you did not ignore the case, examined the corpse, got back your badge and weapon, found the murder weapon and interrogated the Deserter to extract the true testimony from him.
- Having to leave the force - this will happen if the assessment of your investigation proves negative. The easiest way to get kicked out of the force is not examining the hanged man's corpse (there is an achievement for this: What body?), failing to protect Kim during the confrontation in front of the hostel (he ends up injured in the infirmary) and revealing that you're intoxicated.
Some skill checks may appear during the interview. One of them involves the Hand/Eye Coordination skill and may pop-up after you show the badge. Failing it will cause the badge to fall to the ground, which won't help your image.
The final part of the meeting will concern either Kim or Cuno - you can ask them about their further plans, as well as try to get them a job in the 41. precinct (there are separate achievements associated with this).
After confirming readiness, the scene will end and you will see the rest of the unlocked ending.
Disco Elysium does not allow you to continue playing after the plot wraps up (regardless of the ending). If you want to resume exploring the city and completing side quests, it is best to load a save from before the first point of no return.
