Inspect the phasmid is a Disco Elysium task, which you can unlock after extracting a confession from the Deserter on the island. This walkthrough explains how to start the quest, how to avoid scaring away the phasmid and how to pass the skill check when trying to communicate with this mysterious creature.
Unlocking the task
The great insect can appear after interrogating the Deserter - this is part of the main tasks Extract a confession from the Deserter and Extract a motive from the Deserter, both described on separate pages of this walkthrough.
After extracting the testimony from the Deserter and learning the reason why he murdered the hanged man, you decide to arrest him. The phasmid will prevent you from doing so. You can learn that the insect has appeared in advance by passing the Perception skill check. It is not mandatory to receive the task.
The phasmid will appear in the grass north of you while trying to move away from the campfire and head back to the boat with the Deserter.
We recommend that you save the game at this point because you have a few more difficult skill checks ahead of you.
Getting close to the insect
The Electro-Chemistry skill check is linked to approaching the phasmid without scaring it off. You can increase your chances of passing it by completing the side task Find Morell, the Cryptozoologist - the man you got the pheromones from. In addition, you can wear items of clothing that increase Electro-Chemistry.
Observing the insect
Passing the test will allow you to continue watching the insect. Failing it will make the phasmid escape.
If Kim is with you, it is recommended to agree to take a picture of the phasmid. If you're with Cuno, this action will unfortunately not be available.
You can try to touch the insect and communicate with it - the latter interaction entails an Inland Empire skill check. The chances of passing it can be increased if you have "talked" to the hanged man next to Whirling-in-Rags (in addition to wearing the right outfit).
Passing the check will allow you to ask the phasmid a few questions. Regardless of the course of the meeting, the phasmid will eventually leave the location.
It is worth searching the phasmid's nest, where you can find two items: T-9/32 Rifle Scope and the Fairweather T-500 Helmet (+1 for the Half Light skill, -1 for Suggestion).
If you have already collected the remaining T-500 armor pieces, you can now explore the purple orb and complete the side task Where is the rest of the armor?.
Completing the task
At the end of the task, you must return to the Deserter. Due to his state of health, you decide to leave the man on the island and return to the mainland without him.
You will receive 15 XP and the last main task The Return will begin.
