In the quest Extract a confession from The Deserter from the game Disco Elysium, your task will be to skillfully conduct a conversation with the Deserter from the island. The walkthrough in our guide tells you where The Deserter is and what evidence to present to the shooter and force him to reveal the truth.
Unlocking the Task - getting to the Deserter on the island
As a reminder, The Deserter is a wanted shooter and you can meet him on the island in the final part of the game. Once you reach the island, you must first explore the anti-aircraft tower to complete the tasks Open the Blast Door and Find Fuel for the Generator. The result of this will be the unlocking of the western exit of the tower (picture above) - it leads to the deserter's whereabouts.
Make sure you've checked the sniper's hideout (where you got the fuel canister) beforehand, so you should have completed an earlier quest Find the place of the shot - Harry will determine that the sniper was shooting from the island. This will be one of the hiding places to use to force the Deserter to reveal the truth.
A linear path will lead you to the campfire, next to which the Deserter sits. You do not need to be afraid of a forceful confrontation with this character, but it is worth creating a manual record of the state of the game - in front of you are long conversations with a man, in which there will be, among other things, Skill Checks.
Confrontation with the Deserter
In the initial part of the conversation, it is advisable to force the Deserter to put the rifle on the ground instead of allowing him to hold it in his hand.
After the man executes your command, you can look at the Triangong 4-46 rifle (you will determine the appropriate caliber of shells, among others) and eventually add it to your inventory.
During the conversation you can find out, among other things, about the long stay of the Deserter on the island and about his previous murders. Ultimately, you have to raise the topic of whether the deserter fired a shot at the hangman - this will start the officially described quest.
Your task is to present at least 3 pieces of evidence of the man's guilt. They can be:
- Received rifle using bullets of the same caliber - this is part of the task begun much earlier Find the murder weapon.
- The researched sniper's hideout in the ruins east of the anti-aircraft tower - this allowed you to complete the Task Find the place of the shot.
- Found footprints inside Whirling-in-Rags - you may have come across them during the Exploring Secret Passages in Whirling Task. Take the Drama Skill Check to make a comparison.
- Examined Dried May Bells on the balcony at Whirling-in-Rags - they were next to Klaasje and related to them was the quest Ask the player about the May Bells.
At some point during the interrogation, you can choose to hit yourself in the head to recall further clues to associate with the Deserter. Kim or Cuno can also give you additional tips.
If you selected the evidence correctly, the Deserter will finally confess and you will receive 70XP for it. This is not the end of this conversation yet - you can now take up the next quest Extract a motive from it and we have described it on a separate page of our walkthrough.
