Last update: 21 July 2024
On this page of the Disco Elysium guide, you will find a detailed walkthrough of the Pay for damages side quest. In our walkthrough, you will learn how to collect the necessary 130 reals, how to lower the bill owed to Garte, and how to make it easier to cover the damage in Whirling-in-Rags caused by Harry.
- Talking to Garte about the damages
- Money from Joyce
- Money from Evrart
- Money from Lena
- Money from Kim
- Asking the police station for funds
- Completing the task
Talking to Garte about the damages
In this task, Garte (cafe manager at Whirling-In-Rags) must be paid for the damage done in the hotel room. Garte will request 130 reals. Getting such a large sum of money on the first day won't be an easy thing to do.
You can try to avoid full payment in the following ways:
- The Savoir Faire skill check is an escape attempt. Failing it will cause you to lose 1 health point. If you pass, your due payment will be reduced to 100 reals. You can also pass the Rhetoric skill check and reduce the payment to 60 reals.
- The Authority skill check is an attempt to arrest Garte. If passed, it can initially reduce the payment to 70 reals and ultimately to 30 reals.
Money from Joyce
Joyce Messier is staying on a yacht, which is moored northwest of the hostel.
You can ask Joyce for money to cover damages - you have to pass the Volition skill check.
Money from Evrart
This is a man who is in the harbor at the eastern end of the city - we described how to locate him on the page Where is Evrart Claire?.
During a long meeting with Evrart, you can take a bribe and so, receive reals to cover the damage.
Money from Lena
You can talk to Lena, she's a woman in a wheelchair on the ground floor of Whirling-in-Rags. Harry can ask her for money.
You will receive a pin to sell in a pawnshop (south-west of the hostel) and will unlock the side task Pay Lena back for pin - we described it on a separate page of the walkthrough.
There are also other valuable items to find or get in the game. You can view them in the inventory and sell the most valuable ones at the pawnshop. Be careful though, as some items may be linked to other tasks.
Money from Kim
If you did not take any steps towards paying off the debt on the first day, then at 10 p.m. Kim will want to talk to Harry and a text bubble will be displayed on his character card.
He will offer to help and say that he owns the item Radiant Spinners, which can be sold to get money to pay off the debt. Go to Kim's car, search it and take the valuable item.
Once you get the Radiant Spinners, head to the pawnshop (southwest of the hostel) and talk to the owner.
Roy will pay 200 reals for the item and Kim will give you 130 reals (or less, if you negotiated with Garte) to cover the Whirling-In-Rags bill.
Asking the police station for funds
This variant is suggested in the log, but it is the worst one. You can contact the police station using the radio in Kim's car, which is parked south of Whirling-in-Rags.
After trying to ask to pay off the debt, Harry will be ridiculed by his work colleagues and won't receive any reals. Moreover, begging for money can lead to a decrease in the hero's morale.
Completing the task
After you get the cash, you can return to the hostel and pay Garte for the damages. During the conversation, choose one of the three available dialogue options - you can choose the one that suits you best. You will receive 70 XP and unlock access to sleep in your hotel room.
Note - this is not the last payment you'll owe Garte. Each night at the hostel costs 20 reals. We have described when and how this can be avoided on the page How not to pay for a night in Whirling-in-Rags?.
