The streets of London are full of life.

While traveling through the cities of London you will meet members of few groups. Each of them will react differently to Jacob or Evie. Using the eagle vision you can spot allies (green color), policemen (blue color), various enemies (red color), marked targets (yellow color) or common bystanders. Below you will find a short description of each important group.

Blighters and Templars

Enemies marked with red color. They will attack you on the street until you buy the "Notoriety" gang upgrade. Once you buy it, they will no longer initiate the battle. During the story missions you will be always attacked when found. Templars differ from Blighters in outfit (usually they wear black coats and a band on their hand, while the Blighters wear mostly red).

Rooks

Rooks are members of allied gang. You will find them during story missions and on the streets once you start liberating districts. A gang upgrade will increase their numbers (for example, they will start riding in carriages). Allies won't attack you and they will fight nearby enemies when you are detected. You can recruit them, if you do it they will follow you and attack marked targets.

Policemen

Law enforcers are marked with blue color and they don't start the battle (unless during some missions on restricted areas). However, once provoked, they will mercilessly attack the character you control. They will also attack when they will see a battle between you and your enemies. It works in both sides, the policemen will attack both your enemies and allies.

Bystanders

The bystanders allow you to hide in the crowd. - Citizens of London and notoriety levels | Crafting - Crafting - Assassins Creed: Syndicate Game Guide & Walkthrough
The bystanders allow you to hide in the crowd.

The bystanders are the background of the events. You cannot attack them and they possess no threat to you as well. The only important ability related to them is hiding in the crowd. In case of a larger group of people you can stand among them, this will protect you from being spotted. Your character will become slightly pale when camouflaged in the crowd.

Shops

You can find some shopkeepers scattered through the city. They can offer you supplies replenishment (for example, of revolver bullets). Gang upgrades can reduce the prices of some items. One more thing is very important when it comes to shopkeepers - you can buy maps from them that will mark, for example, all chests in a district. This will allow you to quickly find these chests and obtain crafting materials or obtain all the collectibles.

Events in the crowd

Killing the criminals attacking bystanders is one of few random events. - Citizens of London and notoriety levels | Crafting - Crafting - Assassins Creed: Syndicate Game Guide & Walkthrough
Killing the criminals attacking bystanders is one of few random events.

While traveling through the streets of London you can notice some random events occurring in the crowd. They appear in various places and have different context - sometimes you will see an escaping thief, other times you will have an opportunity to kill bandits or a messenger. These situations are often triggered by using the quick travel points. It is a good idea to complete the random events - they are very easy and completing them will take only few moments.

Alert states

Enemies immediately react to player, even remaining for too long near them might provoke them to attack. - Citizens of London and notoriety levels | Crafting - Crafting - Assassins Creed: Syndicate Game Guide & Walkthrough
Enemies immediately react to player, even remaining for too long near them might provoke them to attack.

When sneaking up on restricted areas (territories marked with red color on the map) you can be detected. Enemies on such territory (including policemen) have three alert phases that depend on your actions and detection.

First state is complete calmness and ignoring the character. If you are not detected, the enemies will be performing their routine activities and will patrol along the regular paths.

Second state occurs when you are detected. While moving, a yellow bar above the head of each enemy is filled. If you remain visible for long enough, the bar will fill and the enemy will become interested in your presence. Probably he will start going in your direction. If you're on closed territory, detection almost always ends in raising the alarm and the enemy attacking you.

Third state is when the yellow bar is replaced with a red one. Enemy will prepare to attack and you will have few final moments to escape or quickly eliminate him. Enemies will remain aggressive until you escape and regain anonymity. If one enemy detects you, others that are nearby will be alarmed as well.
