Last update:
The Sacred Wounds puzzle is a mandatory puzzle to complete in the Vatican in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This walkthrough sums up all of its steps: reaching the chamber in the Underground under the Tower of Nicholas V, examining 5 murals of Jesus, the discovery of Roman numerals and setting switches on the central mural to unblock the passage.

The Puzzle in the underground of the Tower of Nicholas V
- You will reach the location of the Sacred Wounds puzzle during the main quest The Stolen Cat Mummy, which happens during your first visit to the Vatican.
- As part of the aforementioned quest, you must ultimately get to the underground under the Tower of Nicholas V. Exploring the underground will lead you to the location from the screenshot; there is a central mural here showing Christ and 5 other ones in the area related to his crucifixion.
Optionally, you can photograph the main mural and the side ones. Indy will comment on each one and you'll also earn Adventure Points.
How to examine 5 murals?
- First, focus on reaching the 5 frescoes in the area; you can discover them in any order.
- First mural (Holy Chalice) is to the left of the central mural. You have to remove the bust - pick it up and drop it anywhere.
- At each of the murals you have to pour some wine into a bowl (you received the wine earlier from Antonio). In this case, you will see the Roman numeral II.
- Second mural (Body of Christ) is in the left room and when you enter it, the gate will close behind you. Using the wine will reveal the number II.
- Head to the left passage (the only available one) - it leads to the third mural. Use the wine again; this time it will reveal the number III.
- After that, leave the room and return to the central hall. Find a two-handed melee weapon in the area: pick it up and break through the weakened wall shown in the screenshot.
You can also re-unlock the passage leading to the second mural; grab the chain to raise the grate again.
- Fourth mural (Walking on Water) is to the right of the central mural (see the screenshot above). Pouring wine will reveal the number III.
- You will reach the fifth mural (The Anointment of Jesus) through a narrow passage in the right part of the room, as shown in screenshot 1. Use the wine again and you will reveal the number IV.
- Approach the chain; interacting with it will allow you to raise the gate and return to the central room.
How do I set the switches?
Return to the central mural and pour some of the wine into the bowl in the same way as before. 5 interactive switches will pop up on the mural. You must set each of them (in the I-IV range) based on the Roman numerals that appeared next to the murals you've examined earlier.
Solution to this puzzle is as follows:
- Top left switch (the right hand of Christ; 1 in our picture) - set the number II;
- Top right switch (left hand of Christ; 2 in our picture) - set the number II;
- Middle switch (where the spear is inserted; 3 in our picture) - set the number III;
- Lower left switch (right foot of Christ; 4 in our picture) - set the number III;
- Lower right switch (left foot of Christ; 5 in our picture) - set the number IV.
- Completing the puzzle should cause the mural to rotate, which will reveal an exit.
