Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Release Date: December 9, 2024
Action, FPP, movies, action adventure, interwar period, Game Pass, singleplayer
An action-adventure game from Machine Games (the creators of Wolfenstein games). Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is based on the movie license but tells a completely new story set in 1937. Indy is looking for the titular artifact, visiting semi-open locations of the Vatican, Egypt, and Thailand.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a single-player action-adventure game developed by Machine Games studio, known for its successful productions under the Wolfenstein brand (starting with The New Order from 2014). The game was published by Bethesda Softworks and its executive producer was Todd Howard, who also oversaw the development of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, among others. It was released under the Lucasfilm Games brand, which was reactivated in January 2021.
Story
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is not an adaptation of any film, but tells a completely new story featuring the famous adventurer. The action of the game is set in 1937, between the events presented in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
After witnessing a break-in to Marshall College, confronting a mysterious thug, and having a seemingly insignificant artifact stolen, Indy finds himself on the trail of the titular Great Circle, which is associated with an ancient power. The protagonist must hurry to find the Great Circle before the Nazis following his trail achieve the same goal, intending to use it for their evil purposes. Jones is not condemned to a solitary ordeal. He can count on the help of the game's second protagonist - Gina.
Gameplay
In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for most of the time we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The camera changes to third-person perspective (TPP) only during certain actions, for example while climbing. The search for the Great Circle leads us to various places - from the Vatican, through Egypt, ending at the submerged temples of Sukhothai in Thailand.
By exploring them and carrying out the missions set before us, we must avoid traps and terrain obstacles, jump over abysses and also deal with enemies. Although there is nothing to prevent us from engaging in open conflict (fighting with fists or shooting firearms), often a better solution is to sneak behind the enemy's back and eliminate them by surprise. The semi-open structure of the visited locations encourages experimenting with various solutions to problems.
Environmental puzzles also play an important role here. Among them, we will find both puzzles necessary to push the action forward, as well as various optional challenges, hiding precious secrets. The icing on the cake are the spectacular action scenes straight out of Indiana Jones movies.
Our main tool is a whip, which we use while exploring (swinging over chasms, climbing to higher ledges), during combat and to distract enemies. In addition to this, we can make use of throwing weapons and melee weapons (like hammers or spades).
Cast
The face of the titular character was modeled after movie star Harrison Ford, but he speaks with the voice of the popular actor Troy Baker.
Engine
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is powered by the id Tech engine, created by id Software studio.

TheGamer: 3.5 / 5 by Eric Switzer
It’s a fun story with some decent gameplay variety that’s authentically Indy. You won’t miss much by strictly sticking to the main quest, and in fact, your experience will be better for it. It’s a shame the rest of it falls so flat.
PC Gamer: 86 / 100 by Ted Litchfield
Like if an immersive sim got caught in a teleporter accident with Uncharted. Some aspects of The Great Circle are weaker than others, but it joins Batman Arkham and Goldeneye in the god tier of licensed games.
Gamer Social Club: 9.5 / 10 by DeMandre Pressley
Minor complaints aside, I did go in expecting Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to be a good game, as Machine games has always been a solid developer but the game ended up exceeding my expectations. It blends its various gameplay styles together quite well, has an enjoyable story with a great cast of characters that finally gives Indiana Jones his definitive game without ironically being a carbon copy of the two gaming franchises he inspired heavily.
The main pros of the game
- Visuals and Presentation: The game features stunning graphics and detailed environments, making it visually appealing and immersive. Many players praised the artistic design and level detail.
- Story and Atmosphere: The narrative captures the essence of Indiana Jones, with engaging storytelling that feels like a classic film. Voice acting, particularly Troy Baker's portrayal of Indiana Jones, received high praise.
- Nostalgic Elements: Fans of the franchise appreciated the numerous references to the original movies, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
- Puzzles and Exploration: Players enjoyed the puzzles, which, while not overly challenging, provided a satisfying experience. The exploration aspect of the game was also highlighted positively.

The main cons of the game
- Gameplay Mechanics: Several users criticized the combat system, describing it as weak and clunky. The AI of enemies was often described as unintelligent, making encounters less challenging.
- Lack of Manual Save Options: The absence of a manual save feature was a common complaint, with players expressing frustration over being unable to save their progress at will.
- User Interface Issues: The menu system was described as clunky and immersion-breaking, making inventory and map access frustrating.
- Repetitive Gameplay: Some players noted that the gameplay became repetitive over time, with similar mechanics and challenges throughout the game.
- Bugs and Technical Issues: Many reviews mentioned bugs and glitches, including crashes and performance issues, particularly on PC.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Complex Puzzles: Players desired more challenging and varied puzzles, as many found them to be too simplistic or straightforward.
- Greater Freedom and Non-Linearity: Some users expressed a desire for more open-world elements and player freedom, feeling that the game was too linear and restricted in its exploration.
- Loot and Resource Management: There were calls for a more robust loot system, with players wanting enemies to drop items that could be used, adding a layer of resource management to the gameplay.
- Improved Stealth Mechanics: While stealth was a part of the gameplay, many players felt that it could be enhanced to provide a more rewarding experience.
- Better Map and Guidance System: Several players found the map and quest guidance lacking, leading to confusion and frustration during exploration.
Summary
- In summary, "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" is appreciated for its visuals, storytelling, and nostalgic elements, but it faces criticism for its gameplay mechanics, technical issues, and lack of certain features that could enhance the overall experience.
