Ghost of Tsushima: Best starting armor Ghost of Tsushima guide, walkthrough
Last update: 16 July 2020
This page of the Ghost of Tsushima guide includes a list of the best starting armors. We have prepared information about three outfits which you can unlock early in the game and two really good armors found in the later parts of the campaign. Each has a different practical use.
- Traveler's Attire
- Samurai Clan Armor.
- Ronin Attire
- Great armor from later parts of the campaign
- Armor upgrades
- Changing armor
Traveler's Attire
The Traveler's Attire is a "starting" outfit that is useful throughout the entire game, not just in the early hours of the campaign. The outfit is perfect for exploration - use it when travelling in unfamiliar areas and equip it after each victorious battle in an enemy location.
The most important features of this outfit are:
- Track artifacts with the Guiding Wind.
- Reveal larger portions of the map while traveling. This will help you find unique locations on the map.
- Controller will vibrate when you are close to an artifact. This feature helps a lot in finding records, Mongolian artifacts, banners and other collectibles.
You can get the Traveler's Attire as a gift from the first merchant encountered in the game world. You can find one of the merchants in the Hiyoshi village - you visit it early in the game.
Samurai Clan Armor.
Samurai Clan Armor is useful in direct confrontations. Its main feature is reducing the damage you receive. It is a good idea to wear this armor before or after a fight begins (if, for example, Jin gets spotted by opponents).
The most important features of this outfit are:
- Receiving less damage. It is worth noting that this also applies to range attacks.
- Moderate increase to health. This is a fairly obvious way to reduce the risk of dying.
- Recover resolve while receiving damage. This is a helpful bonus since you need resolve to, e.g. heal Jin.
The Samurai Clan Armor can be obtained during the Tale of Lady Masako main quest. It is one of the starting main quests done in the first region of Tsushima. Jin receives the armor from the armourer found in the Golden Temple.
Ronin Attire
Ronin Attire is an ideal choice for sneaking in locations overtaken by the Mongols. Enemies will have harder time detecting Jin. He will also be able to use stronger stealth attacks. Wear this outfit before entering an enemy location and during any mission that rewards or forces stealth.
The most important features of this outfit are:
- Jin is more difficult to detect. You won't have to rush to find another hiding spot.
- Deal more damage with melee attacks. You can use this bonus for stealth attacks, but also after getting detected.
- Jin is also harder to detect after leaving tall grass. This feature is similar to the first one - very helpful in stealth.
Ronin Attire is obtained at the end of the Blood on the Grass main quest. It is one of the starting main quests done in the first region of Tsushima. You get it from Ryuzo after you reach the Straw Hats encampment.
Great armor from later parts of the campaign
Below you will find two examples of very good outfits found in the later sections of the game. You don't have to use them, of course - you can have your favorites. You get new armors by, e.g. completing side quests and Mythic Tales.
The first great armor from the later part of the game is the Ghost Armor. It is found in the second region of Tsushima (Toyotama). You can't miss it - Yuna will give it to you as part of the From the Darkness main quest.
The most important features of the Ghost Armor are:
- Reduced enemy detection speed. The effect is greater than that of Ronin Attire.
- Reduce by 1 the number of kills needed to enter the Ghost Stance. Ghost Stance is a powerful attack that allows you to instantly kill up to 3 opponents. They won't be able to counterattack you.
- Kills have a chance to terrify a nearby enemy. This is a useful bonus, as terrified opponent will temporarily stop attacking Jin.
Another excellent armor, this time from the third region of the map (Kamiagata), is the Mongol Commander's Armor. This item is a reward for completing Fit For a Khan side quest, which can be started at the Jogaku temple. This quest is about obtaining pieces of armor from several locations occupied by the Mongols.
The most important features of the Mongol Commander's Armor are:
- A huge bonus to the health bar. This greatly improves the hero's health.
- Receive much less damage. Another bonus that will help you stay alive. It also applies to ranged attacks.
- Disguises you while out of combat meaning that Jin will be harder to detect. This can be a very helpful bonus if you don't like to fight too often and you don't like to switch between armor for stealth and combat.
Armor upgrades
You can upgrade your "starting" armors by visiting armourers - you definitely shouldn't miss this step. This improves their bonuses, for example, Jin will have an even greater health bonus or opponents will have even harder time detecting him. Focus on those outfits you use the most - each upgrade requires a lot of crafting materials.
The Mongol Commander's Armor, found at the end of our recommended list, is the only one that cannot be further improved. Luckily, its starting statistics are very good - the lack of options for upgrade shouldn't be taken as a serious disadvantage.
Changing armor
In Ghost of Tsushima, you can change your outfit at any point in the game. We strongly advise you to use this option to match the passive bonuses of armor to the current needs. You can change your outfit even during combat. You change them in the pause menu - you won't be attacked when selecting another outfit from the list.
