Why are combos important?
Combos in Anthem have three important pros:
- Combos deal much more damage than single abilities.
- You can weaken nearby enemies. This is very useful when you are fighting with bigger groups of enemies.
- Combo attacks don't require any resources nor energy. You only have to wait for the abilities to cooldown.
Preparing Javelin's abilities
To perform a combo, you need two specific skills available to your Javelin class.
The goal of the first ability is to inflict a negative status on the target. It can be, e.g. burning, freezing, getting electrocuted or poisoned.
These abilities are marked with an icon resembling a crosshair - Frost Shards is one of them (available to Storm class).
The second ability has to cause a combo effect on the enemy weakened by the first skill. Combo won't work on an enemy that wasn't damaged by the first skill. Also, you have to be quick - the effects of your first ability will wear off after a certain period of time.
These skills are marked with an icon resembling a start - Lightning Strike is one of them (available to Strom class).
Performing combo attack
To perform a combo successfully, you have to complete the following steps:
Step 1: Get close to a group of enemies.
Step 2: Be sure that both abilities are ready to use.
Step 3: Attack enemy/enemies with the first ability to inflict a negative status (e.g. fire, ice, electric, acid).
Step 4: Attack the same enemy/enemies with the second ability. If everything is done correctly, you will see COMBO! text (see the picture above).
Another advantage of combos is that negative effects can also be inflicted on other enemies. How weakened they get depends on the type of ability. The picture above shows an example of a combo attack that inflicted freeze status on nearby monsters. This was possible thanks to Frost Shards ability.
Additional information about combo attacks
- A melee attack can also be used as a skill that prepares targets for a combo or as an initiator. This is different for each class. For example, Ranger can use their melee to weaken an enemy, Storm can use a melee attack to initiate combo on a weakened enemy.
- If you play in a team, use attacks performed by other players. If you notice that someone has weakened an enemy, follow it with your own skill to perform a combo.
- Some enemies are resistant to certain types of attacks or elements, e.g. they can't get frozen. Even if you use the first skill, that enemy won't be weakened - using the second ability won't initiate a combo.
