On this page of the Horizon 2 Forbidden West guide we provide information on how to hunt wild animals. You'll learn how to hunt effectively, how to find specific animal species as well as the uses for meat and other resources animals drop when killed.
Key information about hunting
Horizon Forbidden West's game world is inhabited not only by machines but also by various species of animals and birds. You can hunt them to obtain unique loot they drop.
Your Focus is very helpful when hunting wildlife, but you should remember to hold down the right analog stick to perform a thorough scan instead of a singular impulse. The focus will mark animals with yellow. You can also tag wild animals to make tracking them easier.
The bow is the best weapon for hunting. Shoot from a long distance, try not to startle the animal. You should also activate concentration to reduce the risk of missing.
The quality of loot wild animals drop is unfortunately random. You can't always expect finding the same loot - sometimes you'll only get regular meat. Still, you should try, given how killing animals doesn't waste a lot of ammo.
Uses for items obtained during hunting
Wild animals leave two main kinds of items behind. The first one is meat which can be used to:
- order food from cooks found in many settlements and other allied locations - the better the food, the higher quality meat you must deliver,
- craft potions - the better the potion, the better meat you need.
The second one consists of hides, bones and other similar items. They're used to upgrade your Pouch at workbenches to increase your inventory size. You must know that different ingredients are used to craft different things. They're not universal.
Some specific wildlife trophies can be difficult to find. You may get some help from:
- Their descriptions in the inventory - these can tell you where to look for a specific species.
- The option to create Jobs - they make it easier to search for specific kinds of loot and can be activated by pressing Triangle on the screen with missing ingredients. We've covered this topic in more detail on a separate page Jobs - what are they?.
