Last update: 13 June 2024
On this page of the guide to Horizon 2 Forbidden West you'll learn how to obtain the Diving Mask - a very useful gadget letting you swim underwater and find treasures or secrets without needing to worry about limited oxygen.
Diving and its limitations
Horizon Forbidden West puts more emphasis on diving and exploring underwater locations, but unfortunately it limits you at first via your limited oxygen supply. Aloy can't hold her breath for very long. This can make acquiring underwater plants or collectibles more difficult, while making some areas, such as the Sunken Caverns, inaccessible.
You shouldn't risk diving for too long, as you may very easily run out of air while deep underwater. It's best to just hold off on diving until you obtain the mask.
How to obtain and use the Diving Mask
The Diving Mask is a unique gadget letting you freely breathe underwater - this means you can dive deep down without needing to resurface and without needing to worry about drowning.
You'll obtain the mask during one of the main quests - The Sea of Sands. It tasks you with exploring the buried ruins of Las Vegas in the southern area of the world map.
During The Sea of Sands quest Aloy will meet some allies who'll help her acquire the Diving Mask blueprint. After obtaining the parts necessary for making it you'll be able to craft the mask at any workbench.
The mask will immediately come in handy for exploring the large flooded building underneath ruined Las Vegas. You'll be able to familiarize yourself with the controls, avoiding swimming machines or "catapulting yourself" (Circle) in case you need to escape from underwater enemies.
After completing the main quest you can return to the previously discovered optional underwater areas and examine large bodies of water found in the game world, as they can all hide unique crafting ingredients, treasure chests or Black Boxes.
