Use for potions

There are many different potions you can use to heal. The most basic ones (Healing Potions on a grey background) regenerate health overtime, which isn't very optimal when you're trying to save yourself from death. These potions are common, and even though overtime you'll be finding larger flasks, they still work in the same way.

HP Potions, on the other hand, have a green, blue or purple background. They restore health instantly, by an indicated percentage of your maximum HP. They're much more effective, especially if you have a lot of health. However - they aren't sold by regular NPCs. The same applies to the market, where only the most powerful Elemental HP Potions can be bought.

Obtaining potions

Potions often serve as rewards. Eliminating Elite enemies (marked with a horned helmet icon on the map) usually grants you a few potions. While the basic ones are common and aren't worth much later on (though they still have their uses outside of combat), other types of potions are extremely valuable. You receive them as rewards for completing quests, but not often and in small quantities. As you gain levels and unlock achievements you can be rewarded with potions and potion chests.

By hovering over Recent Prices you can learn of the potions' prices for the last few days.

The main ways of getting them are crafting (in the Stronghold) and the Market (only Elemental HP Potion). Potions are crafted mainly with flowers, in the quantities given in the potion recipe - you know the recipes from the start. You can obtain the resources needed yourself or buy them at the Market.
