Sugar beets are a root crop, the cultivation of which requires special preparations and tools. On this page of the guide we have described what equipment you need to grow sugar beets and what the cultivation process looks like.

What do you need to grow sugar beets?

The machines required or useful during beet cultivation are:

  1. Medium or large tractor - the machines used for optimal sugar beets cultivation are heavy. For this reason, you need a large tractor that is capable of handling it.
  2. Plow, subsoiler or spaders - when growing sugar beets, the most optimal method of preparing the field is plowing. So equip yourself with one of the plowing machines, according to your preferences.
  3. Stone picker or rollers (optional) - after plowing, stones will appear on the field. Getting rid of them will prevent damage to vehicles during the next steps. If you used a plow or subsoiler, the stones will be small - get rid of them with a roller. If you used spaders, the stones will be large - get rid of them with a stone picker.
  4. Spreader and lime (optional) - every third harvest or so you should do lime spreading, which will give you a big bonus to your harvest. Equip yourself with a lime-compatible spreader (limestone icon in the store) and the lime itself.
  5. Fertilizer device and solid fertilizer (optional) - to maximize yields you need to fertilize a field twice. Each solid fertilizer requires a different machine. If you use slurry or manure, you can do double fertilization - this way you will not have to repeat the process later, between fertilization and harvest.
  6. Seeder and planter - sugar beets are one of the plants that can be planted with universal seeds. After filling the planter with seeds, you have to choose the crop you want to plant - choose sugar beets.
  7. Weeder, hoe or sprayer (optional) - if you have plowed with a subsoiler or spaders, weeds will grow in the field. Get rid of them as soon as possible, preferably within a month of planting the sugar beets. Depending on the size of the weeds, you will need to use a weeder, a hoe or a sprayer.
  8. Sugar beet harvester and haulm topper - sugar beets require their own exclusive harvester, which you can buy in a tractor-mounted version, self-propelled or as a header for a universal harvester. Before harvesting, you must also cut the haulm on the field using a haulm topper. If you have a powerful tractor, you can attach a topper to its front, and a harvester to its back. In this way, by driving around the field, you will be simultaneously cutting haulm and collecting beets. Self-propelled sugar beet harvesters already have a built-in topper, but they are quite expensive and require their own header to be connected.
  1. Front loader with Ruby 2000 attachment (optional) - you can transfer the collected sugar beets to a front loader equipped with a special Ruby 2000 attachment. Activating the header processes the beets inside it, turning them into beet pulp. They are worth more than whole beets and have more applications.
  2. Large trailer - beets cannot be stored in silos. You have to place them on the ground, keep them in trailers or in buildings, so you can wait for the moment when they will bring you the most profit. Building a belt system will help you load beets onto trailers after they have been dumped.

Periodic calendar and sales

If you play with the seasonal calendar turned on, you will be able to plant beets in March and April. They can be harvested in August and September. If you're late, the beets will wither.

Sugar beets are best sold in December. They are then worth around 594 euros per tonne. Beet pulp, on the other hand, is worth around 765 euros per tonne. Once you have more funds, you can also build factories where beets and beet pulp can be processed into more valuable items:

  1. Sugar factory - here you can process 2 kilograms of sugar beets into 1.05 kilograms of sugar. You can also process 5 kilograms of beet pulp into 3 kilograms of sugar. Sugar is worth around 1,500 euros per tonne and can be used in even more production chains, e.g. in bakeries to make cakes.
  2. Biogas plant - you can process beet pulp into electricity, methane, and digestate here. The exact conversion rate depends on the efficiency of the biogas plant.
