Grass is one of the crops in Farming Simulator 25. It's used mainly for producing hay and silage. On this guide page we have described how to grow grass and what machines you will need to do it.

What do I need to grow grass?

The devices and items required or useful during grass cultivation are the following:

  1. Any tractor: growing grass does not require an overly powerful tractor.
  2. Cultivator or harrow (only during the first cultivation): when growing cereals, the most optimal method of field preparation is cultivation. Therefore, make sure you have a cultivator.
  3. Rollers (optional) - cultivating with a regular cultivator may cause small stones to appear on the field. Getting rid of them will prevent damage to vehicles going forward. Since the stones will be small, you can use rollers to press them into the ground, thereby slightly increasing your yields. Shallow cultivators and harrows do not leave stones behind.
  4. Spreader and lime (optional) - every third harvest or so you should do lime spreading, which will give you a big bonus to your harvest. Equip yourself with a lime-compatible spreader (limestone icon in the store) and the lime itself.
  5. Fertilizer device and solid fertilizer or rollers (optional): to maximize yields, you need to fertilize twice. Use any solid fertilizer and any machine of your choice. If you use slurry or manure, you can do double fertilization - this way you will not have to repeat the process later, between fertilization and harvest. It's also worth mentioning that after grass harvests, the field will lose only one level of its fertilizer. This means that after the first successful crops, fertilization needs to be redone only once. Instead of a solid fertilizer, you can also use grass rollers, which have the same effect as a single fertilization but do not require being filled with fertilizer. Use them immediately after harvesting.
  6. Seeder and seeds (only during first cultivation): the sowing process requires a universal seeder and universal seeds. After filling the seeder with seeds, choose grass as the plant you want to sow; you can change plants using the Y button on the keyboard. The grass regrows after it's cut, so you will only need to sow it once.
  7. Mower or harvester with a header - for harvesting, you will need a mower or a suitable harvester with a dedicated header. Most of these devices will leave the grass on the ground; you will have to collect it later yourself. It's also worth mentioning that you will get larger yields if you wait another month after the grass becomes ready for harvest.
  8. Hay tedder (optional): if you want to turn the cut grass into hay, you need to run a tedder over it. It will immediately turn grass into hay. If you care about the grass or want to make silage from it, skip this step.
  9. Windrower (optional): after cutting the grass, run the windrower across the field. It will arrange the cut grass (or hay) into rows, which will make it much easier to collect or process into bales. Some more expensive mowers come with windrowers by default and they can be activated while mowing.
  10. Forage wagon or baler: when collecting grass or hay, you have two options. You can collect them loose (wagon) or process them into bales (baler). You have to drive both machines over the harvested plants in order for them to be collected automatically. When the machine is full, you have to empty it. If you use a wagon, you can throw the grass outside the field. If you use a baler, you can throw the grass out in the form of bales that are easy to collect again. Balers also require material for rolling grass into bales: if you run out of it, you can buy more in the store.
  11. Bale loader (optional) - bale loaders are special trailers equipped with an arm that collects bales from the ground. This will allow you to easily collect bales and transport them elsewhere. Make sure that the loader you've purchased is compatible with the shape of the bale you choose (square or round).

How is grass used?

Grass is the foundation of animal nutrition. You can use it to feed cows, horses, goats and sheep. Additionally, you can convert it into hay. Hence, if you raise any animals on your farm, it is worth dedicating one of your fields to grass cultivation and order your AI workers to handle it.

You can also process the grass into silage, which is worth twice as much as grass. Silage and hay are also components of mixed feed, which is the best and most efficient way to feed cows.

In our guide, you will find separate pages where we describe silage and hay in more detail.

How to sow grass?

Sowing grass is not particularly difficult - just choose any field, plow it and use virtually any seeder (you just need to choose the right seed). Of course, a special grass seeder is also available in the game, but it is not particularly necessary unless you plan to transform fields into meadows on a mass scale.

Sowing grass is a one-time thing. Once you do this, it will keep regrowing each time. Additionally, this plant is low-maintenance, so you can plant it practically at any time of the year (except for winter).

How to mow grass?

You can collect grass from anywhere on your plot, even if it is not a field. Hence, you can invest in a manual lawnmower and walk with it along the roads. However, this solution will not work if you run a more extensive animal farm. Therefore, it is better to designate a field for grass cultivation.

If you have decided to grow grass on a larger scale, it can be mowed in two ways:

  1. Using a mower attached to the tractor. Available individually or as a set for front and back.
  2. Self-propelled lawn mower, which is definitely more expensive, but works at a much higher speed.

You will find both of these types of devices in the Lawn Mowers section of the store.

How to collect grass?

Once you mow the grass, you will have to collect it. There are two ways to do this: each of them will give you a different end product.

  1. A forage wagon is a convenient and cheap option to start with. It allows you to collect grass in loose form. It's a good option if you want to feed the animals without any problems.
  2. Balers are a more advanced solution. The machine collects grass, hay or straw and processes them into bales. After that, you have to collect them using a special attachment or a forage wagon. This is an easier form of storing grass. Additionally, if you have a wrapper, you can produce silage from it.
