Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks Star Wars Outlaws guide, tips

Starting tips for Star Wars Outlaws will help you start a new adventure and avoid common problems. The tips on this page of the guide cover the reputation system, combat, sneaking, world exploration and companion cooperation, among others.

Last update: 28 August 2024

On this page of the Star Wars Outlaws guide you will find a set of starting tips - useful knowledge for starting your adventure with the game and learning some of its important mechanics. Our tips are related to topics such as stealth, combat, exploration, factions and reputation system, loadout, or Nix.

Sneaking is helpful and sometimes required

For more tips on stealth, see Should you use stealth - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. Star Wars Outlaws is a game where you'll definitely need to sneak around more often than you might initially think. Kay can easily die in direct confrontations - the heroine doesn't have a lot of health by default, and additionally, after raising the alarm, reinforcements may appear. There are also places in the game where being detected means failing the mission objective, meaning you will have to restart the sequence.
  2. Above all, look for opportunities to surprise your opponents - Nix could be the perfect support here. The animal companion is very helpful in luring enemies to places of your choosing and will allow you to easily perform silent takedowns. You can also whistle, but this works best in places with tall grass.

Be careful when making choices and actions that may worsen relations with factions

We also covered the topic of factions and reputation on a separate page - How does the reputation system work - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. Star Wars Outlaws has a reputation system - you have separate relationships with each faction in the game world, which are symbolized by reputation bars. A high reputation may result in, among other things, rewards and access to areas of a given group. After lowering it, you may suddenly lose the right to enter the faction's territories or even become its enemy and be attacked on sight.
  2. The game will not allow you to easily maximize relations with all factions, and this is most visible in the choices - very often a given choice is in favor of faction A and will improve relations with it, but is disliked or harms faction B and will worsen your relations with it. Try to balance this out so that none of the reputation bars fall to the very low level. Reaching the lowest level of reputation with a given faction may make the game unnecessarily difficult for you.

Avoid falling from great heights

1 - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. You may be in for an unpleasant surprise if you have played a lot of games from the Assassin's Creed series in the past. Kay Vess can receive damage even after falling from a moderate height. Falling, for example, from a tower or the top of a cliff can mean instant death.
  2. Falls may also cost you medications. Instead, look for stairs and ladders, or places where you can jump more safely, e.g. onto stacked crates.

Once you reach a location with no exit, look for places to use the grappling hook

2 - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. One of the most common reasons for getting stuck in a particular location is missing a place for the grappling hook. Scan the area (up on the D-pad) and look up. Places for the grappling hook may include tree branches, climbing walls or protruding bars. Using a grappling hook will allow you, for example, to pass an abyss and reach distant ledges.
  2. Always make sure to swing well on the rope before jumping, because this is not an automated process. Making a jump at the wrong time could cause you to fall into the abyss and die.

Increase your stock of bacta vials

More about healing on the FAQ page How to heal - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. Kay only carries 2 meds by default and this may make it difficult for you to effectively regenerate the health in missions and battles where there are more enemies to defeat.
  2. Some clothes have the ability to increase the number of bacta vials in your inventory. Try to increase the limit to 3 medicines as early as possible. You should also keep looking for bacta vials in the explored locations. This way you will avoid having to spend credits on them at traders.

Practice the lockpicking mini-game

The lockpicking mini-game is also described in more detail on the How to pick locks - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. Star Wars Outlaws includes an unusual lockpicking mini-game. Instead of manipulating a lockpick, you have to complete rhythm games - these can be quite tricky and it's worth practicing on the simplest first locks from the beginning of the game, found shortly after repairing the data spike.
  2. Remember that you must react to each flash of the yellow light. You can't skip a beat, but the game will let you start where you want to - just wait a few seconds to see the sequence and prepare to complete it flawlessly.

Complete the expert challenge on an ongoing basis

You can learn more about experts on the How do the experts mechanic work - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. In SW Outlaws , there are no classic experience levels or development points. This has been replaced by an expert mechanic - a kind of skills trainers. At the start of the game, you will only meet one expert, but more will be added to the list as you progress through the main story.
  2. Each expert has several skills associated with them, and you must complete their challenges to unlock a given skill. The game allows you to check the requirements (e.g. defeating X enemies in a specific way) and track them. Try to unlock useful skills quite early, such as permanently extending your health bar (Armoured Undershirt skill).

Question marks related to exploration appear only on the compass

3 - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. There are no towers that reveal fragments of the map. Instead, you must travel across the surfaces of planets and moons to gradually remove the so-called fog of war - the speeder is very helpful in this.
  2. Question marks don't appear on the map either, instead you have to spot them on the compass at the top of the screen - they will appear when you are about 150-200 meters from a given location. It is then worth going straight to the place shown by the compass to discover it - from that moment on, the location will be permanently marked on the map.
  3. It works slightly differently in the case of shops, important NPCs, or mini-games. These types of places are not marked with question marks. Markers will automatically appear on your map once you are several dozen meters from your destination.

Scan the surroundings and look for interactive objects for Nix

4 - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. From the very beginning of the game you have 2 useful techniques for examining the area. Nix Sense (up on the D-pad) will allow you to spot opponents so you can more easily prepare to avoid or surprise them.
  2. Nix Mode (L1/LB button) can mark places to send Nix and it is worth experimenting with it as much as possible. Your animal companion can, e.g. manipulate switches, take items from inaccessible places, open passages, or rob/attack/distract enemies.

Look for opportunities to discover Intel in cities

In addition to the Intel and main missions, you can also do side missions and faction quests - doing the latter is a good way to build relationships with factions - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. As you explore the cities in the game, look for interaction icons - they can appear above the heads of selected NPCs or near readers, walls, railings, etc. These are potential opportunities to gain valuable information or have/eavesdrop on conversations.
  2. You may also find the so-called Intel - it functions similarly to, for example, minor tasks or clues pointing to hidden treasures. You can track the unlocked Intel in the journal in a similar way to traditional quests.

In addition to the Intel and main missions, you can also do side missions and faction quests - doing the latter is a good way to build relationships with factions.

Don't spend your credits at traders right away

5 - Star Wars Outlaws: Tips and tricks - Basics - Star Wars Outlaws Guide
  1. The game world is inhabited by traders and service providers - these may be, for example, people responsible for upgrading your ship and speeder, merchants offering equipment, or NPCs selling rare crafting materials.
  2. Traders can be independent or affiliated with a faction - this second factor is very important, because increasing reputation with a given faction can mean a bigger discount from the trader. You can check it in the trade window - we recommend waiting until the discount increases, especially when making larger purchases (e.g. new equipment). Once you reach a certain reputation level, a trader may start selling new rare goods that were not previously available to Kay.
