Alchemy - how to begin

Alchemist's set

The basic requirement for the brewing of potions are bottles with water and the Brewing Stand. Also, a cauldron for water may come in handy (it holds a bucket-full of water, which is equal to three bottles of water). The remaining reagents depend on the type of a potion that you want to brew.

The brewing stand interface

Once you open the brewing stand, you will notice an interface, like the one in the above screenshot. Put an ingredient on the top and up to three bottles, with potion base, or potion to be modified, below. On the right, you will notice an arrow pointing down. If, after you place the ingredient and the bottles/bottle, the arrow does not turn white, this means that you have chosen a wrong arrangement that cannot be processed.

Brewing potions

As the base for brewing potions, you use the Nether Wart (can be found in the Nether). To this potion, you can add any of the following ingredients, which produce the effect provided in the table's right, hand column:

Item

Effect

Magma Cream

Fire resistance

Sugar

Swiftness

Glistering Melon

Increased HP

Spider Eye

Poison

Ghast Tear

Regeneration

Blaze Powder

Adds strength

Fermented Spider Eye

Weakening

Golden Carrot

Night vision

Pufferfish

Water breathing

Rabbit's Foot

Jump boost

Turtle Shell

Potion of the Turtle Master

Phantom Membrane

Slow falling

Fermented Spider Eye

Corrupts effect

Glistering Melon Slice and Fermented Spider Eye

Instant damage

Golden Carrot and Fermented Spider Eye

Invisibility

Additionally, each potion can be subjected to a modifier:

Item

Effect

Redstone

Extends the potion's duration

Glowstone Dust

Increases the potion's effectiveness (most often, also limits duration)

Gunpowder

Turns the potion into a thrown potion (you can throw it at another player/mob)

Fermented Spider Eye

Turns the potion into one of adverse effect (apart from when combined with the Golden Carrot, which results in invisibility)

Important note! To avoid wasting ingredients, brew all three potions from one ingredient.
