Mobs: Cow, Pig, Wolf/Dog, Ocelot/Cat, Bat, Chicken, Mooshroom, Sheep, Squid, Horse, Rabbit, Fox, Panda, Turtle, Parrot, Fish, Llama, Bee, Polar bear, Dolphin - how to breed? What do they drop? Where to find?
Last update: 10 July 2020
There are many different animals in Minecraft. They can be divided into aggressive, passive and neutral (those that will attack if provoked). Some animals can be tamed and bred. Keep in mind, however, that any creatures available in Minecraft can receive damage. This means that an animal can die or lose health when it gets attacked, set on fire, falls into the water or into quicksand. The animals are also vulnerable to explosions and fall damage. This means you must either be extremely careful about your own animals, or direct them in a such way that would kill them. Remember that some animals drop valuable items upon death.

Cow
The Cow is common in the Overworld. From them, you can obtain meat, leather and milk (unlimited amount from each). To keep them, you need to lock them up in a room/enclosure and feed with wheat. After that, they start approaching each other, which results in the appearance of a calf. The calf grows for the next 20 minutes, and the adult cows can bear offspring every 5 minutes.
Pig
You keep pigs for meat. To start a pig farm, you need to feed them with carrots at the minimum intervals of 5 minutes. Piglets grow for 20 minutes. From pig, you can only obtain meat. An interesting thing is that, after you put a saddle on the top of one, and hold a fishing rod with carrot at its end, you can control the animal.
Wolf/Dog
They often come in groups, neutral until provoked. It can be tamed with several bones or meat (apart from fish). They can be bred in the very same way. It can be encountered in deciduous forests and in taigas. It attacks sheep. When a Wolf is hostile, it can attack any player within reach.
The Dog differs from the wolf in terms of aesthetics and it receives a collar, after it is tamed (you can change its color - it is red by default). You can breed them by feeding them with any meat (also rotten). The breeding process will become active is the dog that you have just fed was healthy. It is five times as strong as the feral one and responds to commands of attack, sit/up. Very helpful in combat.
Does not drop any items after it dies.
Ocelot/Cat
Ocelots are tamable animals that live in the jungle. They are fast and it is quite difficult to tame them, because they escape from your character and also require a lot of fish. As wild animals, they attack chicken and sheep. The Creepers fear them.
The best method to tame the ocelot is to use the Lead and locking it up, after which you need to feed it with fish at the correct intervals, until it is tamed. The Fish needs to be raw. Also, to breed ocelots, you use fish, and afterwards, also to breed cats. The cat changes its looks and it becomes black, black and white or ginger. It scares Creepers away and that is their main use. It reacts to commands but is not too useful in combat. Cats also like sitting on various objects, like the bed or the chest, which makes them impossible to open.
After it dies, the cat drops no items.
Bat
Bats occur in dark caves. As a matter of fact, they are a decorative element in the game. They drop no items, you cannot catch them, they do not attack your character and killing them provides no experience points.
Chicken
The Chicken, is a basic farming animal. You can obtain eggs, meat (poultry) and feathers from them. to breed them, you need to feed them with seeds (melon, wheat, pumpkin or nether warts). After being fed for 5 minutes, it accepts no more food. You can also breed them by throwing eggs. The probability of obtaining a chicken this way is 1/8.
Mooshroom
Mooshrooms is a specific variety of the "Mooshroom cows". They can only be met in the mushroom biome. Apart from the looks, what sets them apart from the regular cows is that mushrooms grow on them, which you can pick later on. So, if you have the opportunity, keep Mooshrooms instead of the regular cows. If fed, like the regular cows, with wheat, they rear offspring every 5 minutes (if fed).
Sheep
Sheep can be found out in the wild if four colors - white, black, brown and gray. You can dye them after which, if sheared, they give wool in that color. To breed them, you need to feed them with wheat at the 5 minute intervals.
Squid
The Squids live in water reservoirs and that is where they spawn. You cannot keep them on your farm, and only intercept them, because they cannot swim up the current you can devise a system, e.g. a waterfall from which they will be falling into your reservoir. After being killed, they drop black dye.
Horse
Horses are the most intricate animals in the game. They are not hostile towards your character, they can be tamed by means of several attempts to break in. After you kill them, you can obtain leather. They come as horses, donkeys and mules (to obtain a mule you need to cross a donkey with a horse). By finding a saddle, or purchasing it at the village, you can ride them and control them. You can also dress them in special armor (which also cannot be crafted). It is problematic to breed them because, for that, you need golden apples or golden carrots.
The characteristic feature of Horses is their speed, onto donkeys and mules you can put a chest and travel with your equipment.
Rabbit
Rabbits are most often found in the following biomes - desert, flower forest, taiga, tundra, snowy beaches, and frozen rivers. It is important to note that their appearance varies between the biomes.
Rabbits like carrots. To get them, they will jump off a cliff, swim in the water, but they won't jump into lava. If you want to make this adorable creature approach you, just pull out a carrot and wait for the animals to notice you.
Fox
Foxes only appear in two types of biomes. This determines their color. You can breed foxes using sweet berries.
Remember, though, that foxes are inherently aggressive animals. They feed on chickens, rabbits, small turtles, salmon, and cod. Because of this, you can often encounter them hunting other animals.
Panda
Pandas live in jungles. Unlike many animals in the game, they have various personalities. We have described each of them in detail on a separate page of our guide.
Upon death, a panda can drop a bamboo.
Turtle
They are passive mobs that live on beaches - they can be found both in water and on land. You can lure turtles with seagrass. This is how you can breed them. Remember, however, that small turtles can be attacked by, e.g. zombies, ocelots, or wolves.
Parrot
Parrots appear in five colors - green, blue, grey, red, and cyan. These animals can be domesticated with seeds. A tamed parrot can sit on the character's shoulder and accompany you in travels.
However, parrots will avoid the water if you enter it. They will either teleport to you when you come ashore or follow you.
Trivia - if you feed the parrot a cookie, it will die after a few seconds.
Fish
Fish come in four variants - tropical fish, cod, salmon and pufferfish. For more information about individual fish species, see the separate guide page.
Llama
Llama is a neutral mob that can be tamed. Llamas are like donkeys and mules. You can put crates on them to make traveling easier.
You can also put a carpet on a llama. This way it will stand out from the others.
Bee
Bees are special animals - we have dedicated them a separate page in our guide. Thanks to these animals you can get honey.
Polar bear
Polar bears appear only in snow-covered terrains - ice spikes, snowy mountains, tundra, glaciers, frozen oceans and icebergs.
Dolphin
Dolphins travel large bodies of water in flocks. They like to play with the player if an object is thrown into the water.
Due to their herd nature, it's best not to attack them. Although they are very friendly creatures, if you hit even one of them, a whole bunch of dolphins will attack you.
If you feed a dolphin, its trust level will increase. However, if you feed them a cod - dolphins will swim to the nearest underwater ruins or a sunken ship.
