Mods, add-ons, Resource Pack, Custom servers, Plugins: how to install? What are they? Why install?

Last update: 12 July 2020

We have prepared a page with some of the most famous Minecraft add-ons. This will greatly help you find new modifications.

Resource Pack

Used to function as a texture pack. Currently it is also capable of altering the other elements of the game, like, e.g. sounds. it usually comes as a .zip archive and installing it takes m=nothing more than putting it in the "resourcepacks" folder, in the game's main folder (in the search engine, enter %appdata% and select the .minecraft folder, or access it via the direct path: [by default]

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\resourcepacks\ ).

Custom servers

Custom servers is a special server version that has been prepared to by big groups of people which introduce many helpful features, especially when it comes to introducing additional changes, such as e.g. plug-in installation. They can often introduce new elements into the gameplay, game modes, enhance functionality and stability. Installation depends on the individual custom servers. An example of the most popular customs are the bukkit.

Plugins

Simply put, plug-ins most often are simple additions to the server. They often require you to install additional elements for the client. They are capable of expanding the game's functionality, in the case of servers, they are used to expand its functionality by functions, such as, new commands for the command console, or the system for making backup copies of a map.

In the case of e.g. the bukkit, installation is only about putting the .jar file inside the "plug-ins" subfolder, in the game's main folder.

Mods

Modifications (Mods) are, in general terms, fragments of code that are ready to install for a client. The installation process is, most usually, restricted to replacing the game files. Since most files, responsible for the functions of the game, are placed in the game's main folder (in the "version" folder, with the .jar extension and name the same as the name of the game) to access them, you need to use a file archiver and replace certain files.

However, you always need to read the instructions attached to a mod, in order to install it properly, and to learn about the possible bugs that it contains/may cause. Sometimes these may be serious errors and, without a backup copy, it may require reinstallation of the game.
