Last update: 23 June 2021
This page of the Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart guide describes the most important information about exploring the game world. Among other things, you'll learn what you can gain from exploring your surroundings, as well as traveling to different planets.
- Advantages of exploration
- Location map
- Starting Exploration Skills
- Getting to places that are hard-to-reach
- Interplanetary travel
Advantages of exploration
As you play Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart , you should never focus solely on the current mission objective, as you can gain a lot through (optional) exploration and acquire unique items. The main advantages of exploration in the game are:
- The ability to gain bolts, ammunition and health by destroying different types of crates,
- The ability to find raritanium crystals that are needed to upgrade your weapons,
- The ability to find various secrets - mainly gold bolts, spybots, armor pieces, and craiggerbears,
Location map
In Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, you can use the full-screen map launched from the pause menu (there is no option to use a mini-map in the game, unfortunately). It shows the surface of the planet or other large location you are currently in.
By default, the map does not show everything from the beginning. You must discover it on your own. It's a good idea to look at it often to determine where to look for more secrets.
The game also has an option to reveal collectibles even from unexplored locations. For this you need to unlock the Map-O-Matic gadget. We describe how to get it on a separate page of the guide.
Starting Exploration Skills
Right from the start of the game, there are some very useful moves that can come in handy for you during exploration, as well as for reducing the risk of falling into the abyss. These include:
- Double jumps - you can use these primarily to reach more distant ledges,
- Magneboots - these are used to travel along magnetic paths that you will find on different planets - they often lead to secrets,
- Tube grind - you can jump on the tubes and start rides that include options to hit passing objects and jump on neighboring tubes,
- Slow fall (holding down the jump button) - this can be helpful for both precision landings and for avoiding larger chasms,
- grapples - by default there is an option to swing on the rope after hanging onto a grapple, but later there is also a line-throwing gun (we mention it in the next subsection),
- Opening rifts - these can be pocket dimensions or rifts that you can pull yourself to in order to, for example, avoid a chasm or reach a secret location.
Getting to places that are hard-to-reach
When exploring the game world, you can't get everywhere right away. You need to make enough progress in the story, or you might lack the appropriate gadgets. Fortunately, you'll get all the gadgets to help you explore while completing the main storyline. You can't miss them. The most important actions to unlock in relation to exploration are:
- wall running - you will unlock this after getting the gauntlet upgrade in Nefarious City after encountering the Phantom,
- Penetrating Barriers - You will unlock it after getting the gauntlet upgrade in Nefarious City after encountering the Phantom,
- Bouncingoff ramps - this will become possible after getting hoverboots during your first visit to Savali,
- Catapulting out of the grapples - you will be able to perform this move after unlocking the grappling hook on Torren IV.
Interplanetary travel
Once you have completed all the mandatory steps on your first visit to Sargasso you will unlock access to a spaceship, which is used to travel between planets. You can:
- Visit brand-new locations - more are gradually unlocked as you progress through the main story,
- Return to previously visited planets - this is a great way if you didn't manage to complete a planet 100% right away.
Interplanetary travel in the game is free and unlimited. Use it to get missed collectibles, do side quests, or return to the Gastropub for more arena battles.
It is worth noting that the game always dictates whether a planet is to be explored by Ratchet or Rivet. Each of these characters has identical abilities, and you don't have to worry about missing something when playing as Ratchet or as Rivet.
