Monster Hunter World - multiplayer mode Monster Hunter World Guide

Last update: 06 February 2018

Monster Hunter World can be played alone but the game really shines when it is played with others. Hunting in a team where everyone has a different gear is a great experience. Below you can find the most important information and answers to questions regarding the online mode.

How to play Monster Hunter World with your friends?

Playing online is a completely different experience than playing solo. - Monster Hunter World - multiplayer mode - Tips for start - Monster Hunter World Game Guide
Playing online is a completely different experience than playing solo.
  1. Choose the option to create an online session (preferably private) when you are in the screen that lets you choose your character's slot. Then, open the menu, search the communication tab and find the option that lets you invite friends.
  2. Your invited players aren't visible in the city. You have to go to the Gathering Hall - there you can interact with other players who are currently in the lobby.
  3. Gather your group and go to, e.g. the quest board and select a quest that you want to start. The game asks you how many players will participate in it (a maximum number of players is 4). You can also, e.g. set a password which is helpful when you are in an open lobby.
  4. Confirm a quest and prepare yourself. Your friends need to walk to the quest board and select the option to join a quest. You must all confirm that you are ready. After that you can hunt together!
  5. If you are already on a quest then search for an option to shoot a SOS flare - other hunters will join your current quest.

Squads - what are they?

You can create your own squad. - Monster Hunter World - multiplayer mode - Tips for start - Monster Hunter World Game Guide
You can create your own squad.
  1. Squads are similar to clans and they can consist of up to 50 players. You can be a member of 8 squads at the same time. This means that you can be a part of a huge community of hunters.
  2. To join a squad, you have to be invited personally by its leader. After that you have to go to communication tab and accept that request.
  3. To create your own squad, you have to go to Gathering Hub and approach the woman next to the elevator. Speak with her and create your own squad -select an emblem and entry its name.
  4. It is easier to join an online session if you are a part of a squad - this lets you join someone who is mid-session and is from the same squad. You can also create a session yourself and let only your squad mates to join you.

Playing online - the most important information

  1. Playing online doesn't necessary mean that the game will become easier. You still have a faint limit. Even though you have a greater "fire power", your team gets a smaller margin of error. By playing alone you can allow yourself to faint a few times - while playing online you have to assume that someone else will make a mistake.
  2. Because of that it is better to stick with familiar players and plan out your team. A melee player can be accompanied by a ranged hunter or by someone who can attack beasts with fast weapons.
  3. When it comes to the difficulty level scaling of online hunts - they are always increased in the same way. A monster becomes stronger when someone joins you but its strength doesn't go up when there are more than 2 hunters. While fighting with another player you both have Palico and the game counts them as if there were four players. However, you won't have any feline companions when you play with two or three players.
  4. All players receive the same reward for defeating a monster.
  5. You can't join hunters with a Hunter Rank that is higher than yours. If your friend has rank 12 and you are at 4 then this means that you can play together only during rank 4 quests.
  6. As for the story quests, all cutscenes in a given quest have to be already watched by a host. This is the only way to join these quests. Those cutscenes are played usually after tracking a monster which means that you will have to shoot a SOS flare to invite other players.
