This page of the Halo Infinite guide explains how to unlock the game's open world and what the main limitations are when exploring it.
Last update: 06 December 2021
On this page of the Halo Infinite guide you'll find information on how to unlock access to the open world, that is, the Zeta Halo ring. We also explain the rules of exploring the world in campaign mode and the limitations present when travelling through Zeta Halo.
The following description does not contain any specific plot spoilers. It only informs on how the initial part of the campaign works.
Unlocking free travel throughout Zeta Halo
You can't immediately explore the game's world after starting a new campaign in Halo Infinite. You must first finish a few missions which are linear and don't allow for much exploration.
Halo Infinite takes place on the Zeta Halo ring, and the first time you visit the open world is during the Outpost Tremonius main quest. Even that isn't exactly the case though, as this quest only allows you to explore the area near the landing pad.
The actual exploration of the ring begins along with the Recovery main quest. Starting from this quest, you can postpone the main missions in favor of exploring the world.
Rules and limitations of exploring the ring
Halo Infinite isn't a typical open-world game. Zeta Halo can be explored, potentially obtaining many valuable prizes for doing so, but the entire map isn't available to you from the start, which means you can't visit every unique area whenever you want. Various obstacles, such as wide chasms or locked entrances to buildings prevent you from doing so. Zeta Halo opens up gradually, as you progress through the game.
The map is very helpful when exploring the available areas, as it always keeps track of the locations you can visit:
- You should prioritize taking over FOB bases. This unlocks new fast travel and resupply points from which you can plan your next expedition. Additionally, taking over a base uncovers the locations of nearby activities and secrets on your map.
- In case of other areas on the map you should hover your cursor over their icons to learn what they are and what rewards they offer. By exploring the map you can obtain Valor points, collect Spartan Cores or unique weapons dropped by Targets (elite enemies).
You can use vehicles to travel through Zeta Halo, which is recommended. When using a vehicle you're more durable, move faster and have access to its onboard weapons. Master Chief can also be accompanied by UNSC soldiers. Their support can be very useful when fighting against elite enemies or encountering other challenges.
Unfortunately you can't reach every area by using ground vehicles, and aircraft don't become available until later. This means you'll have to get to some locations on foot.
