FOB - what are they and how to take over them?
Forward Operating Bases (FOB) are small outposts on the surface of the FOB Ring, which by default are under the control of the Banished. After you advance to the main mission Restoration for the first time, you will be able to explore the game world, and the bases will be marked on the map.
Once you reach the FOB, you have to defeat all the opponents in the area. Their number and variety will vary - some FOBs are more guarded and, in addition, enemy vehicles can be find near them, while others you can take over without much effort.
After you get rid of all the enemies, you need to find an interactive console and use it to confirm the takeover of the FOB. From this moment, the base will be under the control of the UNSC, and it can't be re-taken over by the Banished.
List of applications of Forward Operating Bases
The most important role of the FOB is the possibility to create new bases on the Zeta Halo. You can use them to plan future expeditions or use them as potential destinations when using fast travel.
Taking over any Forward Operating Base reveals activities, locations, and collectibles in the area. You will not reveal 100% of the things that can be found (for example, Spartan logs, Propaganda Towers, or Forerunner Artifacts do not appear on the map). Nevertheless, this can still be useful to explore the map because you will learn about places where you can, for example, gain development and valor points or unlock unique weapons (by killing high-level enemies).
On the territory of each FOB, there is always 1 audio log - a collectible. You can also try to look around the area because there is a chance that you will come across another log.
In each of the operating bases, there are interactive consoles you can use to replenish supply and prepare for missions and free exploration. They are divided into 2 groups:
- Console for summoning vehicles - These are, among others, quads, various varieties of combat machines (including Warthog), as well as flying machines (Wasp).
- Console to order weapons and grenades - They can be helpful if you are out of ammo or want to use a particular type of weapon.
Most things to order in FOBs are unlocked using Valor points, that is, the reputation earned throughout the game. This means that you can not use the best equipment immediately, and you have to wait for some items to become available. At the consoles for ordering weapons, you may also find unique weapons of the Banished. In this case, it is required to get rid of the elite Banished, which is the so-called a High Value Target. They are just mini-bosses on the world map. Each of them leaves behind 1 weapon, which you can use for the rest of the game.
In Forward Operating Bases, there are also UNSC marines. Initially, they are just ordinary soldiers, but you gain more Valor points, more elite allies appear equipped with, for example, snipers or rocket launchers.
The game allows you to take marines with you on missions. They can follow Master Chief on foot, but a better idea is to call one of the vehicles and wait for the companions to get on board. This will increase their chances of survival and allow them to use onboard weapons.
