Black Market Buy is the first main mission, activating automatically as soon as you start the game. The mission objective requires you to stop the black market weapon transaction and the main character will have to reach the atrium of the unfinished hotel in Dubai to fulfill the task. Below you can find the list of objectives of this mission. The latter part of the chapter contains the complete walkthrough of the said mission. You should pay extra attention to the final part of the mission - it can end in various ways, depending on how good you were while completing it.
Note - Before the start of the mission, in hotel, you will be able to pick your starting equipment. Try to customize it in accordance to your preferred style of gameplay (aggressive approach, avoiding detection and so on).
List of objectives
1. MANDATORY - Seal off the access to the atrium - You must travel through the whole hotel and get to the hall with the elevators (M1,5).
2. MANDATORY - Restore power to the keypad - You will stumble upon closed door at the early part of the hotel exploration. You must first find the fuse box in the area and, after restoring the power, complete a hacking mini-game.
3. ADDITIONAL - Jam the signal booster - The signal booster can be found inside one of the apartments located on level 3 (M1,4). If you plan to sabotage it you must do so before getting to the atrium.
4. MANDATORY - Stop the chopper from escaping - The chopper from the atrium (M1,6) can be prevented from taking off by opening the hatch located on the front of the machine and sabotaging it. If you aren't quick enough the chopper will escape (although it won't mean that you've completely botched up the mission).
5. ADDITIONAL - Protect Singh - Singh has set up a defensive position near the chopper in the atrium (M1,6). You can either quickly get rid of all the enemies in golden masks, or you can prevent the chopper from taking off, completing the mission as well. If you aren't quick enough Singh might die (same as before, this doesn't equal complete mission failure).
Reaching the atrium
Before the mission starts you will be able to customize your starting equipment. You can select from two different sets:
- If you decide for the Non-Lethal equipment, you will be able to select a Tranquilizer Rifle or a Stun Gun.
- If you decide for the Lethal equipment, you will be able to select a Combat Rifle or a Revolver.
The above weapons are very similar when it comes to usefulness, although the revolver stands out a little from the rest. Weapon selection for before this mission doesn't have a lot of impact on the course of it, as enemies can be either avoided or eliminated entirely thanks to the advanced augments that Jensen has during the mission. Additionally, you can take the weapons from killed or stunned enemies.
After the landing (M1,1) start the linear march. It will take the main character to the entrance to the ventilation shaft that you must squeeze through. Use the ladder, approach the large containers and use Jensen's strength to move one of them aside.
Perform two longer jumps to get to an elevation. In the next area you can use Smart Vision to locate the cracked wall shown on the above screenshot. Alternatively, you can pinpoint its location on your own. Remember that Adam has the augmentation allowing him to break through weakened walls, here's a good time to use it.
You will find yourself in a room with closed door with a terminal, but before you will be able to use it you will need to restore the power. Move the camera up and jump towards the ventilation shafts travelling along the roof. Use them to get to a side room, locate the fuse box and interact with it. Afterwards, get back to the room with closed door.
You can now interact with the keyboard. The lock is level 1 security - to open it you have to complete a hacking mini-game. A detailed description of it can be found in the tutorial in the game. Additionally, hints associated with it can also be found in a separate chapter of this guide. You start at the blue entrance/exit point and your task is to take over the green register entry (in this case a single one). In order to do so, you must take over the nodes leading towards it. If you are detected by the security, try to complete the operation before the time limit - otherwise you will need to restart the mini-game from the beginning.
Note - If you want to gain the achievement A Heated Combination, use the code 0451 to open the door. You will avoid having to go through the hacking mini-game.
In the next area you will encounter enemies for the first time (they are called Jinn in the game). You can agree to play a short tutorial, introducing you to the cover system. Jensen's primary objective is to reach the nearby elevators (M1,2). There are three enemies located nearby. You can eliminate them by using silent takedowns, or by simply gunning them down. In the former case you should try to eliminate them one by one and try to drag their bodies into secure locations.
If you don't want to eliminate the enemies, you can try distracting them (by, for instance, throwing some objects), or simply go towards the southern ladder and use it to reach level 3. This will allow you to move above their heads without any trouble.
You can reach further parts of the hotel with two different methods. The first one requires you to reach a functional elevator - it's easy to accomplish, provided that you've eliminated all of the enemies.
If you don't want to attack the enemies you can head to the side room. A locked gate blocks the entrance but you don't have to complete a hacking mini-game this time - you can simply go through level 3 and jump into the enclosed area. Here you will stumble upon a new cracked wall. You can break through it to uncover an inactive elevator shaft. As Jensen has access to the Icarus upgrade during this mission, you can simply jump into the shaft, fly all the way down and safely land on the ground.
Regardless of your approach you will reach the part of the hotel with the apartments (M1,3). Your new objective is to get to the hall with another elevator (M1,5). In the first area you can either complete the stealth tutorial, or you can simply skip it. There are two enemies in the area. If you plan to eliminate them (kill or stun them), wait for the enemies to face different directions. Otherwise, you should use camouflage, or throw an object to force them to relocate.
In the next area the game will offer you a direct combat tutorial. However, like in the case of the previous ones, also this one is not mandatory. You should wait for the enemies to scatter around the area, even when you want to kill them. Otherwise, several enemies might appear on level 2 and they will the have high ground advantage.
During the journey towards the current mission objective it's good to stay on level 2 all the time. The reason for that is quite simple - the lower floor is patrolled by a larger group of enemies. On the upper floor, however, the risk of stumbling upon an enemy is significantly smaller and a lot of enemies can be found inside of the apartments, instead of patrolling the corridors.
The largest group of enemies is stationed inside the lookout room and attacking them isn't the best idea, even if you only want to stun them. Their fields of view intersect and the room is observed by at least one of the guards stationed on the upper balconies. There's a palmtop with a code (the exact location is shown on the attached screenshot) located in the area. It will come in handy later on, but acquiring it is not mandatory. You will be able to open the lock even without collecting the palmtop, or simply by using the information provided in this guide.
During your journey you should stop at the second apartment on the level 2 (M1,4). There will be a signal booster hidden inside the room - the device is associated with the optional objective. There are two enemies inside. You can easily stun or kill them (just wait for them to move away from each other), or make some noise in a different place (like, for instance, in the corridor, or on the ground floor) and force them to move from their designated location. Interact with the signal booster to sabotage it - you will be given 250 experience points and bonus xp if you weren't detected.
Note - you will also find the first eBook inside of the room with the signal booster. It's worth to collect them, as every single one you find will give you 100 experience points.
You will stumble upon at least two new enemies during the final moments of your journey towards the atrium. If you prefer the aggressive approach, you can attack them when they are still standing near each other. Otherwise, wait for them to scatter around the area, avoid any contact with them, or simply use your camouflage or throw some object to distract them.
Your destination is the locked entrance leading to the hall (M1,5). You can open it by using two different methods - either by completing a hacking mini-game (level 1 security), or by using the code from the aforementioned palmtop, 0682. After arriving at the hall a short cut-scene will be initiated and you will be given new objectives. Additionally, you will be given 500 experience points and a bonus if you avoided detection.
Stop the chopper from escaping
You were given two new mission objectives. The first one is about preventing the chopper (M1,6) from escaping the hotel, while the second one requires you to keep Singh alive - the man can be found fending off an enemy assault near the machine. The first step is to reach the lowest floor of the atrium. This can be done by jumping into the empty elevator shaft - the Icarus augmentation will prevent you from taking any fall damage. Additionally, time is of the essence - if you're not quick enough, both of the mission objectives can easily be failed.
There's a group of enemies wearing golden masks in the atrium. You should use Jensen's Smart Vision upgrade - it will allow you to easily locate all of the enemies. Subsequent enemies can be eliminated either by takedowns or by attacking them with a firearm (preferably silenced). Try to avoid detection, as those enemies are equipped with augmentations and are far more dangerous than the Jinn you've encountered so far. If you want to avoid any contact with them, march along the left side of the atrium and monitor the radar all the time, so you won't accidentally get into their vision ranges.
The main objective of the mission, stopping the chopper, can be completed without destroying the machine itself. In order to do so, you must get in front of the machine and look for the hatch shown on the above screenshot. Interact with it to sabotage the machine, which will automatically end the mission.
An alternative development to the mission is the escape of the chopper. It can happen if you will take too much time sabotaging the machine. It won't cause you to completely fail the mission, but it will have its consequences in the latter part of the game.
The additional objective of the mission can be easily completed by performing the aforementioned sabotage of the machine, as the mission will be automatically finished afterwards. If you, however, plan to engage enemies in direct combat, Singh can be found to the right of the flying machine. After getting close to the man you must start eliminating the enemies in golden masks that will be attacking him. You can make the task easier by using offensive upgrades, like the Typhoon.
Singh might die if his health bar is depleted. The mission won't end in a failure, but you will have to face the consequences of this outcome later in the game.
For completing both of the objectives (sabotaging the chopper and keeping Singh alive) you can get up to 1,500 experience points and bonus xp if you weren't detected. As it was mentioned before, it can be easily done by ignoring and avoiding the enemies in golden masks and focusing on getting to the flying machine and sabotaging it.
