Vordt of the Boreal Valley Dark Souls III Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Vordt is a boss whose attacks often freeze the target. Therefore, it is advisable to wear and armor with high resistance to cold. If you are hit, your "freeze" bar will start rising. If it reaches the end, you will receive a negative status effect that will lower your armor and the ability to heal yourself. If the bar is getting full, back up for a while so that it lowers a little.
Remember: You can call support. You can choose from two NPCs. Look for the calling sign at the stairs before you enter the arena, on the left and on the right.
During the first phase, Vordt will attack using mainly his mace. If you are close to him, the boss will swing his weapon and when you are at a distance, he will perform a thrusting attack. Vordt holds the mace in his left hand, so try to approach him from the right. It will force him to change his position and it will be easier for you to dodge.
Try to use dodges and sprint so that after the boss attacks, you can immediately find yourself behind his back. If you master this strategy, you will be able to deal far more damage than when attacking from the front. Vordt stays in one place for a while after he attacks (especially when he attacks with the mace from above his head - this attack can be deadly, because several hits come after the main strike - your hero may not have enough time to get up and receiving a burst of blows will kill you immediately). Use this moment to attack the boss from the back.
When you lower the boss's HP to a half, Vordt will become more aggressive. He will start using charge, which he performs three times in a row (the boss will start running at you - prepare to dodge, because you may not have another chance). He will also use an attack that consists in blowing steam from the left side to the right. It is your best opportunity to quickly get behind his back and strike him with the most powerful attacks that you have. It will interrupt the attack and deal a lot of damage. If you can't reach the boss, avoid the steam. Otherwise, you will be immediately "defrosted", which has negative consequences.
To sum up: remember to dodge (keep in mind that the boss holds his weapon in his left hand) and use sprint to circle the enemy and attack him from behind. During the second phase of the fight, watch out for the charges and use the moment when Vordt blows steam to strike fully charged attacks.
