Bonfires Dark Souls III Guide
Last update: 31 May 2016
Bonfires are the special spots that have been placed in every location. They are checkpoints, of a kind. They separate individual parts of vast areas and they allow fast-travel between locations. In each location, there is a specific number of bonfires that are unavailable, at first. Therefore, while passing by a bonfire, remember to light it thanks to which it becomes available as a fast-travelling point.
You can also rest by bonfires. This is replenishes your health, focus points and vials that regenerate both of them. While resting, you also save the spot where you respawn after you die, or after you use an item that takes you back to the bonfire - this is always the bonfire that you have last visited. There is a downside to resting, though. The majority of monsters, with the exception of bosses and unique opponents, respawn.
You can also use bonfires for fast travelling. Any of the bonfires can take you to any other one that you have already lit, regardless of whether it is in the same location or not.
Another thing that you an do at the bonfires is attunement of magic. It allows you to assign spells to slots that your character can use and exchange them.
The last thing you an do at bonfires is using the stash where you can leave items that you do not need currently. Those items become available next time that you sit at a bonfire elsewhere, or visit them.
The bonfire available in the Firelink Shrine is a special one. It is there that you an burn up the Fragments of the undead's bone that you find. This way, you level up the bonfire (with the cap at 10), which translates directly into the potency of Estus flasks and Ashen Estus flasks.
