Champion Gundyr Dark Souls III Guide
Last update: 01 June 2016
Champion Gundyr is a slightly modified version of the boss from the first level. He uses spear in both phases of the battle, so you must watch out for the long reach of this weapon. Since the boss is fast as well, you should always perform dodges to the sides - Champion Gundyr can easily reach you from long distance. You should wear armor that provides the best protection from physical attacks. You should also use a good quality shield, it will allow you to block most of the attacks while receiving small damage.
During the first phase of the battle the boss fight almost exactly like the one known from the Cemetery of Ash. Watch out for the fast swings and attacks that are usually combined into triple combo. After dodging you will have a moment for attack. The forward pushes are most deadly, they can easily reach you from long distance. If you receive two such hits, your character will be probably knocked and the Champion will use this opportunity to jump up in order to crush you into the ground. Watch out for this combination, it is deadly. Another attack, used when you stand for too long in front of the boss, is a regular throw. However, the damage received when it gets you is very high, so watch out when the boss will try to catch you with a free hand.
The second phase of the battle will start once you reduce boss' health bar by half. His eyes will start glowing red and his attacks will become more frequent and aggressive. Your tactics shouldn't change much, only watch out for one additional attack with his spear (when you're standing far from the boss, he will use it to reduce the distance). When you drop to the ground, remember about dodging in order to avoid being crushed into the ground (dodge to the sides, moving to the back might not be enough).
The tactic in this battle is performing medium dodges to the side that can be combined with using shield. Champion's attacks can be parried if you time the blocking perfectly (you will need a shield with Parrying skill and you will need to use that skill). Try remaining behind Champion's back. Once you there, watch out for his kick. In case of a spell user, you should use lightning spells. In order to distract the opponent you should summon the Sword Master (if you defeated him in the Firelink Shrine). However, don't depend on him too much as he cannot receive too much damage.
