Menu used to unlock new powers and upgrades

There are sixteen different powers available in DARK, however each power has one, two or three upgrades. Unlocking new abilities is a very standard process in this game, because it happens as a result of earning experience points. Each time you've gathered enough XP the main character will automatically advance to a higher experience level and he will also receive one power point which you'll be allowed to spend on unlocking a new power or on upgrading one of your existing abilities. You can earn experience points by:

  • eliminating enemy units - the base reward for killing someone is 20 XP, however if you want to earn additional 60 XP you will have to take your enemy by surprise (he can't be aware of Eric's presence at the moment of the attack)
  • completing primary objectives - you can't miss any of the rewards for your progress in the main storyline
  • completing side missions - there are only a few additional tasks you can complete in the game and these missions are given to you by other vampires from the Sanctuary night club
  • finding PDA's (collectibles) - picking up each PDA results in receiving 200 experience points
  • completing areas without triggering any alarms - I strongly suggest that you do your best to avoid detection, because it will allow you to earn a lot of experience points (usually 1000 or 1500 experience points for safely leaving one large location or two smaller ones)

An important thing to know is that if you'll use every opportunity to earn XP then you will unlock all available powers and upgrades long before finishing the game - I was able to achieve this at the beginning of the fifth chapter and by the time the game has ended I had nearly 20 unspent power points. This means that you don't have to worry if you'll fail somewhere and don't receive an XP bonus, because it won't jeopardize your chances of fully developing the main character. It doesn't mean of course that you shouldn't be trying, especially since unlocking all of the best powers early in the game will make it much easier.
