The Thaumaturge: They're Alive The Thaumaturge guide, walkthrough
They're Alive is the title of a side quest from The Thaumaturge with problems with the Szulski mausoleum and the WTA grouping. Our walkthrough explains how to start the quest, how to explore the cemetery at night, how to get rid of the WTA and where to find evidence for Mieczyslawa.
Last update: 04 March 2024
While proceeding through Act 1 of The Thaumaturge, you can play a large optional quest They're Alive. The guide on this page explains how to address issues with the Szulski Family Mausoleum at Powazki, how to fully search the cemetery, how to locate the WAS group HQ, how to investigate the cemetery, and how to get the best ending related to Mieczyslawa.
Warning - This quest has a time limit (Availability of this quest is limited). Don't put it off for later. Progressing too far in the main storyline could cause you to miss the opportunity to finish this quest.
- Unlocking the side quest
- Examining the area around the Szulski Family Mausoleum
- Overcoming WAS
- Following Mieczyslawa's thoughts
- Visiting the cemetery at night
- Completing the quest
Unlocking the side quest
- You can unlock the quest as early as after starting the main quest What We Leave Behind in Act 1. After returning to the Szulski Family Tenement House in Northern Srodmiescie, you should notice a servant standing in front of the entrance to the building - as shown in the picture.
- You'll receive a message from the gravedigger from the Powazki district asking for a meeting.
- Move to the Powazki district in any way you want. The cemetery is temporarily closed to visitors, but the gravedigger will let Wiktor inside. You'll unlock the observation Trouble with the Family Tomb.
Examining the area around the Szulski Family Mausoleum
- You can find traces in the cemetery area - the area marked with a red circle. You'll discover the following observations: Obituary in a Newspaper, Tombstone, and Tomb.
- Get to the entrance of the Szulski Family Mausoleum and you'll come across a gang of hooligans that you need to beat. After the fight, find additional traces in the same place - Discarded Crowbar and Writing on the Tomb.
- Return to the gravedigger to learn about the WAS group, which is hostile to thaumaturges. You'll receive the observation Lunatics from the WAS and the conclusion The Vendetta.
Overcoming WAS
- Leave the cemetery and go south. The WAS group positioned itself alongside the cemetery walls. Talk to the WAS loudmouth - you can immediately reveal that Wiktor is a thaumaturge, or you can hide this information for now. You'll unlock the observation Loudmouth. The conversation always comes down to the fight with WAS members.
- After the fight, it's worth examining this area's new traces - the WAS Leaflet and the Banner on the Wall. You'll unlock the Follow the Thread conclusion.
- At the southern end of the Powazki district, there is the entrance to the WAS headquarters - as shown in the picture.
- Inside you will find, WAS leader - Wlodzimierz Konieczny. This time you can choose between having a peaceful conversation or initiating another fight with up to 4 opponents. Not all dialogue options are available yet, because you don't have all the traces. We don't recommend attempting to end the mission too early, as you might miss the best ending.
- In the WAS hideout, there are also new observations - Unfinished Banner, Anti-Thaumaturge Book, My Noble Way Manuscript, Crumpled Letter, Incriminating Letter, and Framed Photo of a Woman (above picture; at least 3 Word Dimension points are needed to examine - first complete the main quest The Reptilian Bash).
Following Mieczyslawa's thoughts
- Another person you can talk to at the WAS headquarters is Mieczyslawa. Not all dialogues are available right away in this case either.
- You will receive an additional quest objective after extracting the first information from Mieczyslawa. Set it as active, and using perception, you can follow the red trace.
- You'll reach the buildings in the eastern part of the Powazki district. There's a new trace at the entrance to one of the buildings - Mailbox (the above picture; you need at least 3 Mind Dimension points to examine it - complete the Bastards of the Night main quest first). You'll unlock conclusion Against the Agenda.
Visiting the cemetery at night
- This mission objective is available almost from the very beginning of the quest. The night visit aims to explore rumors of the deceased coming back to life. Sit on any bench and choose the option to wait until the night hours.
- Keep exploring the part of the cemetery marked with a red circle and often use your perception. You can unlock the observation Toppled Candle and Shovel (a better-hidden secret in the lower part of the cemetery - as shown in the picture). You'll unlock the conclusion The Living Dead. Submit your report to the gravedigger.
- The gravedigger will identify his assistant Lech as a possible perpetrator. You need to go to the Northern Srodmiescie district.
- Reach Green Square in the southern part of the district (area marked in the attached image). You will meet Lech here, and after accusing him of robbing graves, a fight will begin with him and his friends. After the fight, ask Lech who hired him - you'll unlock the observation Grisly Tableau.
Completing the quest
- You can end this quest early or decide to do it only after finding all the observations in order to have more choices and the opportunity to unlock the "best" ending. Return to the WAS headquarters in the Powazki district. You can talk to 1 of 2 NPCs there.
- The simplest way to solve Wlodzimierz's problem is to make a promise to move Stanislaw's ashes. You must visit the Szulski Family Mausoleum, take the urn with the ashes, take it to the Szulski Family Tenement House, and place it over the fireplace in the upstairs office.
- If you already know that Mieczyslawa is an Okhrana spy, you can betray the woman to the WAS. You must use the special dialogue option of the Mind Dimension (at least 3 points required).
- In the case of Mieczyslawa, you can reveal that you know her secret of being an Okhrana spy and then give her a letter incriminating Wlodzimierz (found as one of the traces in the WAS headquarters). You'll unlock the observation Delivered Evidence and the conclusion Dangerous Liaisons. This will allow the WAS to end its activities and this is the best ending of the quest.
- Regardless of the option you choose, return to the cemetery and talk to the Gravedigger one last time. You can give him a short or long explanation that there will be no more problems with the deceased. The gravedigger will ask for a donation - agreeing to it or refusing has no immediate consequences.
