Do you dream of having your own hippogriff? This page of the guide to Hogwarts Legacy answers whether you can own your animals in the game.
Last update: 20 March 2024
On this page of the Hogwarts Legacy guide, you will learn whether you can breed your own animals, what kind of animals are there in the game and how to care for them. We will also tell you the benefits of having a menagerie and whether animals will accompany you in exploring Hogwarts.
Can pets be companions?
Yes, you can have pets in Hogwarts Legacy , but they are not typical companions, i.e. they do not travel with you as guardians or helpers. Some of them can be used as mounts, such as hippogriffs or thestrals.
You can keep animals in a Vivarium, the entrance to which is in the Room of Requirement (we have described it in detail on a separate page of the guide). In addition to filling this space with your creatures, you also have rather big freedom to modify and arrange it. It will be unlocked during The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom main quest.
Below is a list of activities that you can do with your beasts:
- play - you can use toys found in the Beast toybox or purchased at stores. Some of them are adapted to a specific animal species, for example, the ball for Mooncalf resembles the moon.
- feeding - this can be done manually, but a Beast feeder can also be used for this.
- comb - you can do this with conjured tools,
- name - you can name each animal you own.
Regular feeding and combing will allow you to obtain crafting materials from the animals - if both icons above the animal in the pen turn green, you will be able to collect feathers or fur.
How to increase the number of species?
You can only keep four species of animals in one Vivarium. In order to have more types of creatures, you need to complete Deek's assignments in the Room of Requirement, thanks to which you will unlock three additional pens. The first one will appear after The High Keep main quest, during which you will gain the ability to fly on mounts.
Each of the pens is dedicated to particular types of animals, but this is only a suggestion - in a dark and gloomy forest you can keep both thestrals and kneazles.
How to breed animals?
After unlocking the second Vivarium, you will be able to buy a Breeding Pen blueprint in the Tomes and Scrolls shop for 1,000 gold. Then:
- in Vivarium, use the Conjure spell and place the structure anywhere.
- approach it and choose the species of which you want to have cubs.
- after 30 minutes, a female will have a cub.
Please note that you must have two individuals of the opposite sex (this info is written next to the names of the animals) and they must be in the same Vivarium.
