On this page of the Hogwarts Legacy guide, you will find out if you can be evil in the game. We explain whether there is a reputation system in the game, whether there are separate quest paths for evil characters, whether the game has Avada Kedavra and other unforgivable curses, and whether the use of curses and unforgivable spells is required to complete the campaign.
The page has minor spoilers about the game in general and the available unforgivable spells (curses) and their uses. We have not included any spoilers about the endings or important events of the main story.
Is there a morality system?
In Hogwarts Legacy, you won't find any morality or reputation systems. Choosing a House at the start of the game also doesn't matter. The main story always develops in the same way, and only at one point in the plot you will have differences in the way the problem is solved depending on the House. Only selected relationship quests offer a bit more freedom (a variant of side quests), although they have no impact on the game's finale.
The game doesn't allow you to play an extremely evil character who will not listen to others and follow their own path. During the adventure, you have to complete the main quests in a predetermined way, as well as help other students, take part in lessons and follow orders given by Hogwarts professors.
Unforgivable curses
There are 3 Unforgivable Curses in the game, thanks to which you can impose various curses on enemies (including people, they don't have to be only monsters).
Unforgivable curses are:
- Crucio - enemy will writhe in pain and can transfer the curse to other enemies.
- Imperio - the attacked enemy will start fighting on your side for some time.
- Avada Kedavra - an enemy hit may die instantly. This works on the vast majority of enemies, but you can't kill, e.g. Hogwarts students, professors or friendly NPCs.
The opportunity to learn unforgivable curses appears during the optional storyline of Sebastian Sallow - one of the three most important characters whom you can befriend during the game. The idea of using curses will be actively opposed by Ominis Gaunt, and you can either share his concerns or ignore them.
Learning the unforgivable curses is optional. You can ignore the warnings and learn more spells, or listen to the warnings and stop learning them.
Do you have to use unforgivable curses?
If you have learned one or all of the unforgivable curses, you may use them, but it is not mandatory. They will be added to the list of known spells.
To select a spell, you must place it in one of the active slots of the spell menu. So if you decide that they are, for example, too cruel, you can ignore them and use only regular spells.
