General advice
- Before the duel it's worthwhile to use a ring which increases stamina regen. The boss is relentless, not giving you even a moment of respite. If your stamina isn't too high, putting on such a ring could be a good idea.
- The boss has a unique attack which lowers your character's level by 1. It's well telegraphed, he starts charging energy in his left hand and then lunges forward. If your character gets hit by this attack, you'll lose a lot of health and a single soul level. Always avoid it, it'll cost you many souls needed to achieve this level again.
- It's a good idea to invest into a shield with high physical defense. Old King Allant's attacks are quick, so dodging them isn't always recommended.
- He also has a powerful AoE attack - if he stabs his sword into the ground, he'll generate a huge shockwave. This attack covers a large part of the arena but it can be interrupted by shooting him with a bow, for example. You should equip a bow as your secondary weapon when fighting Old King Allant, as it'll allow you to interrupt his attacks.
- The boss' attacks usually generate a small shockwave, which is treated as a ranged attack. If the Old King swings his sword, he'll leave a shockwave in front of him. It flies in a straight line and is easy to avoid. You need to remember that it can hit you even after you block a swing.
How to defeat the boss in close combat?
Old King Allant approaches your character slowly at first, but he'll cover the distance between you very quickly immediately when he attacks. If he raises his sword, he'll most likely charge straight at you. Keep in mind that sometimes he'll stop mid-charge to change his direction. If you don't feel confident about dodging, use your shield to block.
Old King Allant can also leap into the air and swing his sword. It'll cause a shockwave to fly towards you in a straight line. Dodge to the side or block it.
His most dangerous attack is the soul drain. His hand starts glowing blue, he charges the attack for a short moment and then lunges forward. It deals very high damage and lowers your character's level by 1. The attack is very powerful but easy to avoid by dodging to the side. He usually goes for the soul drain when he's near you.
His AoE is also powerful. He charges it for a while and creates a powerful shockwave after a few seconds. The attack covers a large part of the arena. However, it can be easily interrupted by attacking him or shooting him with a bow. If you don't think you can cancel the attack in time, run far away from him to avoid damage.
How to defeat the boss at a long range?
Fighting the boss at range is pretty enjoyable. The boss is immune to magic and partially immune to fire, which makes spells not very suited against him, but bows/crossbows are a very good choice. Your strategy should revolve around keeping distance, locking the camera on him and constantly shooting.
If you stay far away from him, you may provoke him into using his AoE shockwave. This is the perfect moment to interrupt him with an arrow. If your bow or crossbow is even slightly upgraded, the fight shouldn't take long. You only need to remember to keep your distance and avoid his attacks if necessary.
Finishing the fight
It's worth mentioning that after you beat the boss, in case you've already defeated all other archdemons such as: the Dragon God, the Old Monk, Maiden Astraea and the Storm King, you'll find a huge, black hole once you return to the Nexus. Additionally, the Maiden in Black will no longer upgrade your character.
