How to reach Prison Depths?

Prison Depths cant be accessed right away - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Prison Depths can't be accessed right away. You first need to get a Spider Rune in Slumbering Sanctuary - more details on that can be found on How to reach unavailable locations? - ability runes page.

You can now go to Promenade of the Condemned. Find a vertical tunnel where your character can bounce off of the walls, and reach the ledge located above - the picture 1 shows an example of a place like that (remember that the layout of the corridors is always random). This newly unlocked passage will take you to the entrance to Prison Depths (the picture 2).

Characteristics of the location

Prison Depths is a prison just like Prisoners Quarters, the starting location - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Prison Depths is a prison just like Prisoners' Quarters, the starting location. However, this location is inhabited by much stronger enemies. One of the reasons is that Prison Depths is a biome level 3 location but the monsters encountered here are much more challenging than those encountered in the Ramparts. Some of the creatures are completely new. Caution is advised - you don't know their attacks which means that they can easily deplete a lot of your health points. Besides that you should also prepare yourself to avoid "recurring" traps such as spikes and balls on chains.

Important note - reaching Prison Depths increases the number of visited locations during a single playthrough by 1. The default number of locations that the player has to complete in order to reach the first boss (The Concierge or Conjunctivius) is 3. Unlocking Prison Depths makes you go through 4 locations. Contrary to what you may think, this isn't bad news - the fourth additional location gives you a chance to get more scrolls and better weapons. This, in turn, increases your strength and helps you during fights with the main bosses.

Enemies and other threats

You will meet with a few "old" monsters - you should remember how to deal with them. The majority of your attention should be dedicated to eliminating new creatures (many of them have powerful attacks). Also, don't forget about spikes and balls - use the right analog stick to look around before entering an unknown area.

Note! The list below consists of monsters encountered on the normal difficulty level. Boss Stem Cells, received by defeating the final boss, unlock higher difficulties. After that you can come across new and more powerful versions of the monsters.

Description and guidelines

Zombie - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Zombie

After detecting you this enemy bends and then leaps towards the hero. Touching the zombie deals you more damage. Quickly attack a Zombie if you are near this enemy. You can avoid his leap by jumping over the Zombie or by rolling under him.

Thorny - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Thorny

The main source of problems while fighting with these enemies are spikes on their back because they can damage you when you are attacking with a melee weapon. The best solution is to use ranged weapons, powers, grenades or traps. Luckily for you, Thorny doesn't have a lot of health points.

Kamikaze - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Kamikaze

Very dangerous flying creatures. They appear in their default resting position (you can see them attached to, e.g. a ceiling). They become active once you get closer to them. As the name suggests, a Kamikaze flies towards your character and then explodes. You can receive a lot of damage if you don't avoid this explosion fast enough. Kill these monsters with a melee or a ranged weapon (preferably with an electric whip that targets enemies automatically).

Masker - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Masker

These unique enemies don't have any offensive attacks. Instead, they can create mist that makes nearby enemies almost invisible (you have to look very close to spot them). Killing a Masker removes the mist. However, you shouldn't rush towards him because he is almost always accompanied by other monsters. Creatures covered by his mist become visible for a brief moment when they attack - you can "provoke" them to use their attacks by, e.g. placing traps or shooting blindly with your ranged weapon.

Slasher - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Slasher

Slashers are dangerous enemies. They wield a huge sword and can use up to three attacks in a row. The last attack is the most problematic - it deals the biggest damage and has the longest reach. Parry their attacks with your shield, use ranged weapons or traps (Slashers can't move between floors).

Lacerator - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Lacerator

You can easily recognize these enemies by their characteristic hat. Dangerous creatures that can quickly deplete your health points. A Lacerator's main attack turns him into a tornado that attacks everything in its path. This move can be blocked with a shield but it is safer to place a few traps or to move away from this monster and wait for this attack to end. You can also use a ranged weapon.

Hammer - Prison Depths level in Dead Cell - Game world - Dead Cells Game Guide

Hammer

Large monsters that resemble a spider. Their default way of attacking is to scatter a few bombs around them. A single bomb doesn't deal a lot of damage but a few of them are able to weaken your hero significantly. Besides that a Hammer can send Corpse Flies, weaker versions of Buzzcutters, to attack you. These creatures attack in groups which can make defending from them more difficult. The best way to attack a Hammer is to use melee attacks. Switch to a ranged weapon when it releases Corpse Flies.

Further locations

The only location that can be accessed from Prison Depths is Ossuary. The passage to that region is located somewhere in the prison (the entrance spawns in a random place).
