Obviously, this nation is best suited for multiplayer matches. Focus on civic tree and get those civics that will allow you a greater range of diplomatic options. Create pacts with your allies and together fight with other nations. If your allies were attacked you can join the war without any penalties. Stay close to allied units to share pillage awards and experience regardless of who dealt a fatal blow to your enemies' units. Sumerians receive additional rewards when fighting with barbarians so use proper policies and destroy every outpost that you come across. Because of the multiplayer aspect of the game Sumeria can borrow units from city-states for much cheaper than other nations.
Summary
If you want to fight alone then be prepared to be defeated. Sumeria is the best ally in the game and its full potential can be unleashed only in multiplayer match where you are in alliance with other player. There is no guaranteed way to achieve a victory but you can get a small advantage over other nations if you decide to fight with barbarians. Remember to fight side-by-side with your ally's forces so your units can receive additional experience and pillage awards. If you want to play alone then the safest way to achieve victory is to focus on science or culture and, depending on which nations were picked, you can try to dominate other players. Gilgamesh's bonuses are profitable for allies which means that during a game you will get a lot of alliance proposals which means that, sooner or later, you will enter an alliance.
