New World: Character development New World guide, tips
This page of the New World guide describes gaining experience and advancing your character, character trait development and associated weapon skills, as well as maximum levels and professions.
Last update: 08 November 2021
Character development in New World can be divided into several elements. First of all, you gain new levels and thus get points for which you can improve character attributes. Another aspect of the development is to improve the weapon masteries, that is, abilities related to combat. You should also check out crafting, collecting and refining skills. This page contains all the information about developing a character. You will learn about the maximum character level, ways to quickly gain experience, or all the weapon masteries.

Creating characters
You create your character right after starting the game. Your choices have no impact on the game, but it is worth spending some time on the appearance of the hero - you won't be able to change it later.
Leveling up and level bonuses
You level up in New World by earning experience points. They are awarded for most of the activities in the game - completing quests, killing monsters, crafting, or collecting resources. The best ways to gain experience quickly are described on a separate page of the guide - Experience - how to gain quickly?.
It is also worth mentioning the bonuses received every 5 levels. For example, you will be able to use a bag that increases the carrying capacity, a higher level camp, or additional item slots. The rewards for gaining levels are as follows:
- Level 5 - space for the second weapon; unlocking the camp.
- Level 10 - unlock duels with other players; first slot for the bag.
- Level 15 - you can buy a house; the camp is improved; third quick item slot.
- Level 20 - slot for the ring; unlock the quest for the class 1 Azoth staff.
- Level 25 - the camp is improved; fourth quick item slot.
- Level 30 - second slot for the bag; unlock the quest for the class 2 Azoth staff.
- Level 35 - option to buy a second house.
- Level 40 - slot for earrings; the camp is improved; unlock the quest for the class 3 Azoth staff.
- Level 45 - third slot for the bag.
- Level 50 - unlock the option to participate in invasions; unlock the quest for the class 4 Azoth staff.
- Level 55 - option to buy a third house; the camp is improved.
- Level 60 - unlock Outpost Rush; unlock the quest for the class 5 Azoth staff.
Character traits
Every time you level up, you get 3 points that can be assigned to 5 attributes. The choice should be dictated by the weapon used because the abilities increase their damage (the exception is the Constitution). Attributes are related to the following weapons:
- Strength - main attribute for Sword and Shield, Great Axe, War Hammer, and Hatchet. Secondary attribute for the Spear.
- Dexterity - main attribute for Spear, Musket, Rapier, and Bow. Secondary attribute for Sword and Shield, and Hatchet.
- Intelligence - main attribute for Fire Staff and Ice Gauntlet. Secondary attribute for Rapier and Musket.
- Focus - main attribute for Life Staff.
- Constitution - increases the character's maximum health level. Doesn't affect weapons.
You can reset the points assigned to the attributes for free up to level 20. After level 20, you will have to pay for respec with gold.
Maximum level
The maximum character level in New World is 60. Once you have reached this level, you will no longer be able to increase attributes (Strength, Intelligence, or Dexterity). However, you can keep increasing weapon masteries and character professions.
Weapon Mastery
New World has over a dozen weapon masteries. They are used to create character builds, and each of them works in different situations. You can use two weapons at a time. Remember this and switch between them to use different skills. Descriptions of the weapon masteries can be found on the following pages:
- Sword and Shield
- Rapier
- Hatchet
- Spear
- Two-handed axe
- War Hammer
- Bow
- Musket
- Fire Staff
- Life Staff
- Ice Gauntlet
- Vacuum gauntlet
In addition, the guide also has a page dedicated to developing and resetting weapon skills - Weapon Masteries.
Trade Skills
New World also has skills that aren't related to combat. Crafting, refining, and collecting abilities are also available in the game. They are used for crafting new items, obtaining raw materials (iron or leather), or refining materials. You develop each of them simply by using a particular skill. For example, if you want to unlock the ability to cut down larger trees, you need to improve your felling ability by cutting down smaller ones. A list of all professions can be found below.
