On this page of the guide to Far Cry 6 you'll find the most important information regarding developing your character - we explain how to gain XP and advance to higher levels, how your stats increase and whether the game features a classic skill tree.
Ranks - experience levels
In Far Cry 6 ,your character can earn ranks, which serve as experience levels, as they're acquired for reaching a specific number of XP. We've listed some examples of how to earn XP on a separate page - Ranks and XP - how to advance?. As a reminder, the easiest way of earning XP is completing main missions and side missions.
Each time you advance to a higher rank your character gets stronger and can handle more powerful enemies. Different regions on the world map also have ranks, you should watch out and not visit the regions with higher ranks than yours. Before you visit those regions, try to advance your character's rank first (warning - region ranks gradually increase while you progress through the game, but it happens slower than your own rank advancing).
Statistics and unique features
Far Cry 6 doesn't have skill trees where you choose the skills you're interested in. Aside from gaining higher ranks as described above, you can increase your combat capabilities by obtaining better weapons and armor.
In case of weapons, you should notice how each one is described mostly with base stats, which determine its damage, firing speed, magazine capacity. Regular weapons can be upgraded at workbenches with two main options available - installing Attachments and Mods. You can modify your gun with a suppressor, a better scope, a mod reducing bullet spread or giving the weapon an entirely new feature. You should decide which attachments and mods to use by thinking of the weapon's intended purpose. For example, if you plan to use your rifle for long-range shooting, it's a good idea to modify it with the best scope available. You have to pay for mods with crafting ingredients and you should prioritise the ones that seem the most useful.
Unique weapons can't be modified, but it doesn't mean they're not interesting. They have high base stats and unique traits which could allow you to, for example, poison the enemies you shoot. Equip the weapons that fit your playstyle the most.
It's all a bit simpler regarding armor. Armor is divided into 5 categories - head gear, chest gear, leg gear, foot gear and wrist gear. Each piece of equipment has unique features. They vary wildly and could apply to stealth (reducing noise made when walking), inventory capacity (allowing you to carry more ammo of a particular type), endurance (resistance to a specific damage type) or movement (improved sliding).
Choose the features that are the most advantageous at the time and remember you can freely swap your gear. For example, if you're about to enter an intense battle, it's a good idea to put on gear that increases your defense. You can also look for opportunities to wear 5 gear pieces forming a set.
Acquiring better equipment
New weapons and new clothes can be obtained in various ways, the most important ones being:
- Investigating large chests found in the game world - Remember that the most important chests are marked on the map and always try to examine all chests in a freshly taken over hostile area.
- Bartering with merchants - This is tied directly to increasing your rank, as each new rank adds new items to the shops. Make sure you build the barracks in one of the guerrilla camps to unlock a unique gear vendor.
- Completing operations and Yaran stories - only some of them offer physical rewards, but the journal always lists them, which means you can prioritise the quests providing you with interesting items.
- Completing special operations and Los Bandidos operations - they're unique side quests available in the game.
