Unlocking the quest
You can start this mission after completing chapter 2 - after completing objectives in the Hirokawa Shrine. A quest marker should automatically appear on the map.
The questgiver is the Man Who Saw an Oni.
Search for a dog with a bandanna
Start off by picking up the kibi dango - the food lying on the ground next to the spirit you talked with to start the quest.
Explore the area marked in green on the map. There you will meet a few animals - the dog with a red bandanna you are looking for should be in its western part.
Give the dog a kibi dango
Go to the dog and choose the mind reading option. You must give him a kibi dango, which will work the same as dog food from similar interactions during the free exploration.
Get the dog to call out the oni
You must follow the dog to the place where the yokai Oni is hiding. When you reach your destination, read the dog's mind again.
A small group of Visitors will appear. You have to protect the dog, so use the best attacks you have and be aggressive towards those opponents who are trying to drain the animal's life. You can't let its health drop to 0%.
Receive the oni's power
After the fights, "talk" to the dog once more - this will make the Oni appear. The yokai isn't hostile - hold down the absorption button and obtain magatama.
More Oni and other yokai markers will appear on the world map as you progress through the game. You can reach them in order to absorb them and obtain more magatama.
