Synergy level - experience level
Your primary means of character progression in Ghostwire Tokyo is increasing your synergy level with KK, which functions as your experience level. Your synergy level caps at 50, but without actively trying to complete all the XP-granting activities you should finish the game at around level 35-40.
Increasing your synergy level grants you two rewards:
- Permanent health increase - your health increases by a few percent with each level up.
- 10 skill points
Experience points
We have described the best ways for earning XP on a separate page - XP - how to collect?. As a reminder, the most important of them are:
- Absorbing and transferring spirits - depending on how many spirits you have, a single transfer can bring you a few thousand XP or even over 10,000.
- Completing quests - your journal contains information on how much XP you'll get for completing a mission.
- Eliminating Visitors - stronger enemies reward you with more XP - elite enemies give you a few hundred points for a single elimination.
Unlocking skills
Ghostwire Tokyo features three main skill categories:
- Abilities - related to spectral vision, grappling, gliding, ripping out cores, stealth, obtaining ether, absorbing spirits, enhancing blocking and attacking downed Visitors.
- Ethereal Weaving - related to the protagonist's main powers, that is, wind, fire and water weaving. Purchasing new skills from this category increases damage dealt by your attacks and grants them new traits, such as firing several projectiles at a time.
- Equipment - related to your bow (efficiency, arrow capacity) and inventory size (talismans, prayer beads, food).
We recommend you to first prioritize all the basic skills from each tree. They're cheap, costing only 10 skill points each, and offer many useful bonuses. After buying them all you can start purchasing the subsequent skills. Start out by buying the skills that will benefit you the most, upgrade the abilities and powers you use frequently.
Unlocking new skills requires skill points which can be obtained in two main ways:
- Leveling up your synergy - each level grants you 10 skill points.
- Finding KK's Investigation Notes - each of these collectibles grants you 20 skill points. We've listed the locations of KK's Notes in the Secrets and collectibles chapter of our guide.
Purchasing new skills comes with a serious limitation - some skills located deep down a tree require you to use magatamas. You must obtain one and use it on removing a skill lock before you can buy the skill.
You'll learn how to obtain magatamas on a separate page, Magatama - how to obtain?, in the FAQ section. As a reminder, magatamas are obtained by absorbing yokai and purchasing them from certain merchants.
Jizo statues - permanently increasing energy
Using your powers (wind, fire and water weaving) consumes energy from Akito's limited supply. You need to expand it, otherwise you'll constantly have to replenish it.
Your energy supply can be expanded by finding Jizo statues, one of the collectibles available in the game. Praying to each statue increases your energy supply of one of the powers (wind weaving, for example).
We've listed the locations of all Jizo statues in the Secrets and collectibles chapter of our guide. Make sure you find at least a few fire statues, as fire weaving is your most powerful power, balanced out by its very limited default energy supply.
Prayer beads - Temporary stat bonuses
Throughout the game you can earn or find prayer beads. Each bead makes you stronger, for example, enhancing your powers or making finding a specific type of collectible easier. The beads's effects stack if they're identical.
They work only if you activate them in your inventory. Only a single bead can be active by default, but upgrading the Fukurokuju skill increases that cap. Fully upgrading it should be a priority.
