What are Hyakki Yako?
Hyakki Yako are Visitor swarms. They're groups of monsters traveling through Tokyo. They can be encountered randomly throughout the game, mainly at large crossings and on wide streets. Hyakki Yako can easily be spotted thanks to their blue glow and distinctive noise they make.
What to do when encountering Hyakki Yako?
You have two options to choose from each time you spot the Hyakki Yako.
- Approach the swarm - you'll be transported to an arena and face a large group of Visitors.
- Walk away - each swarm moves slowly on a predetermined path. They won't chase you, so you don't need to worry about them.
Combat and potential rewards
If you decide to take on the Hyakki Yako, Akito will be transported to a separate arena. Various Visitors will spawn in there as well. You'll face common enemies at first, but later on you'll have to fight some elite monsters posing a serious threat.
During the battle you have access to all your powers, your bow and all your consumables. Defeat all the Visitors in the swarm to return to the real world.
On the arenas you'll find ether which restores your energy and red crystals you can blow up when the enemies get close to them.
Defeating the Hyakki Yako grants you two major rewards:
- A large amount of XP. You can easily get a few thousand points for defeating a single swarm.
- New spirits to absorb - this is important if you want to absorb all the spirits available in the game. Defeating the Hyakki Yako spawns unique spirit swarms you can't find by just exploring. You can obtain 15,000 unique spirits in total with this method. Your progress is displayed in the upper-right corner of the map screen (pictured above).
