Fallout 4: Plugging a Leak Fallout 4 Guide
Last update: 17 April 2024
How to unlock: You must complete the Mankind-Redefined Institute quest and then, while in the Institute (M5,6), meet with doctor Justin Ayo.
Quest objectives:
- Check the robotics terminals
- Search Binet's quarter
- Check SRB terminals
- Check service terminal
- Accuse Liam Binet
- Deactivate the security in Justin Ayo's terminal - this objective will be unlocked only if you agree on Liam's proposition about tampering the evidence so that they point to Justin Ayo
- Tell what you found to Justin Ayo - this objective will be unlocked only if you refuse Liam when he will want you to tamper the evidence so that they point to Justin Ayo
Checking the robotics' terminals
Find Doctor Justin Ayo in the Institute. Depending on the time of day, he can reside in the Synth Retention division, travel through the main Institute room or sleep in his quarter. Listen to the conversation with him and offer your help in solving the problem with escaping synths who are probably receiving help from someone inside the Institute. Once the meeting ends, go to the Robotics section in the Institute. Start checking all computer terminals available in this part of the Institute. Each time you must select the View Access Logs option from the menu. After one of such actions the quest will be updated.
Search Binet's quarter
Return to the main room of the Institute and go to doctor Alan Binet' quarter to which you will be pointed by the game. Once you reach the destination, in first order you should speak with scientist's son - Liam Binet. Now go to the left computer terminal. Similarly as before, you must watch the event log (the last position in the list).
Important - if at the end of the conversation with Liam you will pick the bottom dialogue option about wanting to solve the matter in a peaceful way, an option to use Charisma will appear. The parameter must be highly developed for the action to end successfully. Successful persuasion attempt will make Liam admit that he is guilty. In that case you can immediately skip to the "accusing Liam Binet" section in our walkthrough.
Checking the SRB terminals
Another place that you must visit is the Synth Retention section. Start checking the terminals in similar way as previously (the access logs). After one of such operations the quest will be updated.
Checking the service terminal
The service terminal is located in the small room under stairs in the main part of the Institute. Once you get there, you will find Eve (Liam's synthetic mother) working at the terminal. You will be able to solve the confrontation in two ways. If you play as a character with high Charisma and you don't want to kill Eve, you can convince her that you will keep her secret to yourself. Otherwise you will be forced to kill Eve in direct battle.
Accusing Liam Binet
Go back to the quarter with Liam Binet. During another conversation with him you can act in two main ways - you can decide to tell about Liam to Justin Ayo or agree on his proposition of framing Justin Ayo by loading the evidence to his terminal. If you pick the second option, you can use high Charisma and ask for a reward. Additionally, if you have killed Eve previously, you can tell Liam about that, but it will not lock any of the endings of this quest.
Option 1 - Telling about Liam Binet
If you intend to remain faithful to the questgiver, refuse Liam and go back to doctor Justin Ayo. Inform him that it was Liam who helped synths in escaping. Justin will give you 1000 bottlecaps.
Option 2 - Framing Justin Ayo
If you prefer to frame Justin Ayo, you must go to his quarter. Once you get there, simply interact with his computer terminal (you don't need to hack into it) and select from the menu option related to deactivating the security. Go back to Liam and speak to him for the last time. He will give you Liam's glasses (only if you asked for additional reward earlier).
Quest rewards: Experience points, bottlecaps, Liam's glasses.
